Re: Top Spin 4 Video game anyone?

I play under the name D. Martin in world tour mode, so if anybody plays me let me know you're from MTF after

Hopefully you were asking about TS4 instead of Tennis Elbow, if not just ignore what I said

You have 3 major online game types:

World tour - Each week is a new season and there are 4 major tournaments, 2 masters and 1 grand slam which you participate in to gain points. There is also an option to play direct matches where you play somebody waiting in the lobby, but this gives you less points. Beware though as sometimes direct matches take ages to load, in my experience anyway! Also you can only play with your own custom players in world tour mode.

2k Open - You can only play as a pro player and the object is to gain as many points for your favourite player and get to 2000 first, but I don't think anybody cares about that, it's just to play as pro players really.

Online match - Here you can play as a pro or your own custom player and create a match setting or join another (any court, sets).

There are plenty of people to play. Another thing to beware of is that you can sometimes get lag which sucks a bit.

Hope this helps a bit

Hope you like it, and I certainly hope I didn't oversell it! I'll just warn you that the modding process was a bit intimidating for me (I'm competent with computers but I'm no expert). Depending on your level of computer literacy the modding might be frustrating. It took me a few days to get my copy fully modded, and it was only with the help of people on the game's official forum that I got it done. Also, I would say a controller is mandatory to get the most out of the game.

I'm amazed that game design studios with massive resources at their disposal do such a piss poor jobs with a relatively simple game to code. It's just updated Pong, right?

Still, was the 'only $20!' a little over the top?

To leng jai:
Animation in Tennis Elbow is a mixed bag. It's a very low-budget game, but it's mod-able. With the right mods, serve motions and groundstrokes are very accurate for even minor players (much more accurate than Top Spin 4, as I mentioned above). Movement doesn't look great, but you're focused on the ball then and it never takes me out of the game.

I don't do online play, as I've only had the game a few months and I'm not confident enough to go online and face the experts. But there's a hardcore online community. I believe you can make direct connections, but I know there are organized tournaments. Here's a video montage of the kind of play you'd encounter (not my video btw, all the courts and player animations are available as free mods, music isn't part of the actual game, and the rally length is probably because the controls settings aren't set at the most demanding level): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU93Bi24Leg

Edit: Just for clarification, the names on the score graphic are for the users, not the players they're using on the court. There are no licensing issues once the game is fully modded.

How's the animation in Tennis Elbow? Do the players still glide across the court like they're skiing?

Absolutely try Tennis Elbow. Download Sam's Patch (or something similar) and you'll have the whole tour, all the players for the last twenty years. It looks great when you play on high def 2d courts, and the animations can actually be better than Top Spin 4 (they butchered Federer's serve there for example).

Gameplay, most importantly, is also far better. For example, I could routinely beat Federer 0-0-0 on the secret extra difficult setting in Top Spin 4 but it was incredibly tedious to take points off Murray and Simon due to the programmers increasing the difficulty by letting opponents know where you're hitting the ball, where you're going to be, etc. This obviously benefits pushers, but it does not a realistic game make. Tennis Elbow makes it suitably difficult to take sets off of players like Sampras and Federer while still making Nadal and Djokovic just as difficult to beat but requiring different tactics.

And it's only $20!

Bumping this old thread.

Anyone else get really into this game? I hold my finger up when I think the ball is out. Typically when I'm glued to the screen

What I would also love is a tennis manager game. You are coaching a 14 year old to become the next world number one - training, travelling, tournaments, sponsors, media relations, all that stuff...
