Re: The greatest slam performances by a player

federer's wimbledon in 2003 was genuinely exciting to watch, as he still played tennis at that point

also, djokovic in australian open 2008

statistically, i don't know how those compare to the best, but from a performance point of view, they were both great

also, sampras was rock solid in 1995, both at wimbledon and the us

don't think he'll be near the top in terms of stats though

Re: The greatest slam performances by a player

Borg R.G. 1978 according to the stats. Highest level of play winning a slam might be different. Very hard to judge if you didn't, for example, watch Budge in 1938. The highest level I've seen is probably John McEnroe winning Wimbledon in 1984, even though he lost a set in the 1st round. Greatest performance in a slam is a different thing again, & could include heroic overcoming of very long odds.

Re: The greatest slam performances by a player

Djokovic at least for one set could touch Nadal 4 years ago. Borg at his best RG was untouchable at any moment, ever. Answer is obvious.

Basically any RG Nadal has won, but 2008 was simply flawless from the (clay) GOAT.

Re: The greatest slam performances by a player

Of tournaments that I've watched it's got to be Nadal FO 2008. However, I'm partial to Edberg's 1992 run at the US Open where he beat Krajicek (in 5), Lendl (in 5), Chang (in 5) then Sampras in the final.

He was strong but both Almugro and Fiasco must have had 100 unforced errors between them from those two matches.

Sure, he was the boss man, but I thought given the opposition was better in 2007, I was more impressed there. He defeated Nole 7-5 6-4 6-2 (an absolute crushing of a scoreline) and Djokovic just had no way of hitting through him at all, it was a mincing of brutality. Of course he's better, fitter and more experienced now but it was still a beatdown for Nole.

Actually, I've used those former two arguments on more than one occasion. I concur, some of the better grass court players resided outside the top rankings, which was a prevalent trend until around 2007.

Still, it doesn't excuse your inflation of '97. Becker, despite a great effort, was simply a shell of his former self by that year. Woodbridge was an also-ran, making his one strong Singles performance at Wimbledon in the 9 years he'd been on tour by that time. Pioline was Sampras' own shut-out man, whom he routined on every surface.

It really came down to dope king Korda, who played exceptionally well. Grabbing the early break, Sampras served outstandingly in that last set to take him out.

That match aside, I would hope he looked impressive.
flattery isn't necessary

reason i brought up sampras in 97 wasn't because of opponents

was because of his level of play

i did not see a higher, sustained level of play from sampras across any of his wimbledon runs

maybe there was individual matches, but across a tournament, wimbledon 97 was one of his best

Anyway, I would say, based on what I've seen of it, it would be Borg's '78 FO, followed closely by Nadal's '08 RG.

Pretty easy when you're in a clay mug era.

Re: The greatest slam performances by a player

Borg in '78 was dominant - it was a question of how few games opponents would win. And he played in the era of true clay court specialists too (and Vilas who himself had an impressive clay court record but was thoroughly dominated by Borg).
