Re: Paris F: (4) Ferrer def (Q) Janowicz 6-4 6-3

This year I have seen my favourite two players get monkeys off their backs:

1) The best current player (at the time possibly ever) not to have won a slam finally won one.
2) The best current player not to have won a Masters finally won one.

Feels good man! B)

Also, Janowicz to me seems like the first of the new breed who could actually step up soon to challenge those in the top 10. Might even break top 10 in 2013...

It's a huge, huge deal for any player when he makes this type of breakthrough.
The Dutch commentators said that he wasn't at the AO this year because he couldn't find the money to cover his expenses as he had no sponsor whatsoever. That will most likely be rather different in a couple of weeks time to come.

Re: Paris F: (4) Ferrer def (Q) Janowicz 6-4 6-3

Ferrer. So utterly deserved!
There isn't any player on tour who I'd wished to have won his 1st Master's title more, and finally it happened. By playing quite some appealing tennis, too.
And yes, those 'vulturer'-jokes are getting lame. It's not Ferrer's fault that he showed some true balls and totally went for his chances to win this Masters, whereas some of his colleagues ehm... okay, let's just conclude that they didn't feel the need to attempt to do their best.

Congrats to JJ as well. What a week he's had in Paris. And wow the guy's got game. Now here's to hope he'll be able to back it up in the upcoming season.

Flukerrer better enjoy this 'big' win because the top players will not do a collective tank any time soon, which means it's back to glorified challengers for him.

only way to win a Master for Ferrer was like this, the big guns out at early rounds and playing the final against a youngster from the qualy.
This will never happen again, that is the good part of this mess in the matrix.

Just because you think that his game is not boring, does not make it so. It is a matter of opinion and personal preference, which is subjective. So as I said to Matt, the "true tennisfan" argument is a non-argument. Try not to make a discussion personal Sophitia, it's unnecessary. I am not telling you to buy glasses because our preferences differ.
I'm not making it personal, it was a generic "you" I'm just really tired of reading the same statements that are just blatantly untrue in my opinion, being said over and over about Ferrer.
Being offensive and having power is just not the same thing... He lacks power means he doesn't strike as hard. That does not prevent him from trying volleys or dropshots, or trying to find angles to score winners. For me that's not defensive tennis, and if it's not offensive tennis and offensive tennis is linked only to power, then I don't see what's so exciting about offensive tennis

BTW I'm not claiming to be a "truer" tennis fan that anybody else. I won't expect you to read all my posts, but if you had you would know that I'm always the first to recognize that opinions on players are entirely subjective (that's why I don't hate on players, because I know that if I don't like them, it's usually not because they're bad or less talented or anything, but just because I happen to dislike them, sometimes even for no reason...)

And what I mean by "people who call themselves tennis fans" is not that they are "fake" fans, but that they claim to be specialists, and they cannot even see that Ferrer's game has a lot more to it than pushing and defending. Maybe that was true of his game 2 or 3 years ago, but it's no longer true at all.

Basically, I'm not attacking you personally, I'm just really sick of the "boring Spaniard" stereotype, which I think is mostly what makes people claim that Ferrer is boring. And most of the time, the term "boring" is supposed to be correlated to pushing / defending. And yes I do think that people who see Ferrer's game like that need glasses, or need to actually look at him play instead of just seeing him through a biased lens and only seeing what fits their ready-made perception.

Now, I'm not discussing anyone's right to call Ferrer's game unattractive to them. I am not excited at all when watching Nadal, and yet the guy plays amazing tennis by any standard...

I don't know if anyone mentioned in the thread....but I read on another forum that the victory music they played for Ferrer was "Default" by Scottish band Django Django. They lyrics of the chorus of which goes:

"Take one for the team, You're a cog in the machine, It's like a default."

Those cheeky little Frenchies!

I bet everyone using that word had wished many times for their favorite player to get the easier opponent in the next round. In fact, I'm sure of it. I wonder if there is a single Fedfan who is happy when Roger has to play Nadal, for example. It' the same for the vast majority of tennis fans, for sure.
I'll break it down further - attacking David because his opponents failed to play seriously or even show up at all in the tournament they are all SUPPOSED to play, while at the same time wanting your fave to cruise in all tournaments against journeymen is not even the same thing, it is much worse.
For all we know, Ferrer might have wanted to play the final against Murray or Djokovic instead of JJ. Was he supposed to give up once he saw them doing it?
The guy is just doing what he is supposed to do, while others are asking millions to just show their sorry ass in the hometown tournament...
It just escapes me who is crazier here, those accusing of vulturing or the others who engage in such conversations
Totally agree.

Unfortunately I've not been able to follow tennis much since the USO but I absolutely have to add my congrats here for Ferrer finally winning a Masters title Don't know much about Janowicz but he obviously had a great week, even if he couldn't complete the fairy tale on a happy ending, so well done to him too.

Re: Paris F: (4) Ferrer def (Q) Janowicz 6-4 6-3

Well deserved in the end for Pics, and a fantastic week for Janowicz who had his chances in the final as well. Looking forward to see where he'll go from here.

Janowicz has to be the most casual player I've seen when it comes to use droppers. In his match against Simon I think he first won something like 10 straight points when he used the dropshot. Then he lost 5 or 6 in a row but still kept on going with it and finished the match with two consecutive ones. Win or lose, he's entertaining to watch when on.
