One of the rare times Topspindoc says something that makes sense.

I was there and it was awesome... It's true that Wawrinka did not really shine, except in the second set.
Also during that second set Ferru made a couple of very big mistakes, but then he got his game together for the third. Overall I had the impression that he was playing really quite well, better than he'd been playing before he took his little break.

Exactly. I was curious to see this stat, because it was really my impression that he had been incredibly good at the net yesterday. And from what I saw, it was already true during the whole week in Valencia. When he tries to play in doubles, you can also see that, although he's far from being a real doubles player, he's really able to volley very well when he has to.

For a few months now, I've been thinking that he should really come to the net more. It works very well for him. Yesterday I noticed that when he reverted to his usual baseliner's game (or at least the type of points that people see as "characteristic" of Ferrer) he was actually LESS successful. "Pushing" did not give him many points yesterday, more often than not he was the one who made the first mistake. Whenever he started playing with more variety and attacking more, it was much, much better.

I don't even know what to call Ferrer's game anymore. He went from defensive baseliner to grinder to offensive baseliner (though the grinding comes back vs the top guys, still what he's most comfortable with) and now he seems to be turning into an all-court player

This result will cause great distress to Mark Lenders, which is always a great thing IMO.

If Ferrer wins this tournament does he have any chance of finishing the year as number 4?

Easy put aways = Vulture volleys.

Seriously though, Ferrer could have done with a quicker match tonight. Still, he probably won't get a better chance than this to win a MS. Big match with Tsonga now, H2H is 1-1 with Ferrer winning on clay and Tsonga on grass, both in straights. Conditions would appear to favour Tsonga but he hasn't had much success against fellow top 10 players this year, just the one win over Delpo.
