Ok, now that Rafa has won 16 slams, and my good friend @Slasher1985 is getting some heat for his very well done and researched thread that I hope he continues. He is a real tennis fan and great asset to the board. I especially love his work sub top 100 top like 500 or more, that is just excellent work, beyond excellent work.

Now, that being said. I wanted to bring back my thread. While I love Slasher's thread, I myself as a tennis fan feel that certain other statistics should be valued differently than he does. Our lists will be for the most part the same, with only minor shuffles here and there. However, my presentation will differ.

Most important stats: Slams (Amateur and pro), Time spent at World #1 (YE as well as weeks, and in some cases estimated weeks where several players shared #1 for the year, each received a certain number less than the whole), Other big titles like YEC and Olympics and Davis Cup, then we have streaks by surface, by slam, longevity records, title records by surface and overall, total career W-L record, and anything else you want to add. Perhaps Head 2 Head if everything else is so close. In every player I will post both their career highs as well as blemishes.

Slams

1. Ken Rosewall- 23 slams
2. Rod Laver- 19 slams
3. Roger Federer- 19 slams
4. Rafael Nadal- 16 slams
5. Bill Tilden- 15 slams
6. Pancho Gonzales- 14 slams
7. Pete Sampras- 14 slams
8. Novak Djokovic- 12 slams
9. Roy Emerson- 12 slams
10. Bjorn Borg- 11 slams
11. Henri Cochet- 11 slams
12. Don Budge- 10 slams
13. Fred Perry- 10 slams
14. Frank Sedgman- 8 slams
15. Andre Agassi- 8 slams
16. Jimmy Connors- 8 slams
17. John McEnroe- 7 slams
18. Ellsworth Vines- 7 slams
19. Rene Lacoste- 7 slams
20. Tony Trabert- 7 slams
21. John Newcombe- 7 slams
22. Mats Wilander- 7 slams

Time Spent as World #1

1. Pancho Gonzales- 364 weeks, 7 YE #1
2. Bill Tilden- 330 weeks, 6 YE #1
3. Don Budge- 313 weeks, 5 YE #1
4. Roger Federer- 302 weeks, 5 YE #1
5. Pete Sampras- 286 Weeks, 6 YE #1
6. Rod Laver- 277 weeks, 5 YE #1
7. Ivan Lendl- 270 weeks, 4 YE #1
8. Ken Rosewall- 242 weeks, 4 YE #1
9. Jack Kramer- 234 weeks, 4 YE #1
10. Novak Djokovic- 223 weeks, 4 YE #1
11. Jimmy Conndors- 216 weeks, 3 YE #1
12. John McEnroe- 170 weeks, 4 YE #1
13. Henri Cochet- 166 weeks, 3 YE #1
14. Bjorn Borg- 161 weeks, 3 YE #1
15. Ellsworth Vines- 157, 3 YE #1
16. Bobby Riggs- 150 weeks, 3 YE #1
17. Rafael Nadal- 144 weeks, 3 YE #1
18. Fred Perry- 120 weeks, 3 YE #1
19. Rene Lacoste- 104 weeks, 2 YE #1
20. Andre Agassi 101 weeks, 1 YE #1

So there you have the top 20 of all time in terms of slams and #1

@MWW, or another mod, any way to move my thread back into GM?

good

Budge :rocker2:

no drawbacks at all.

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 players ever (Murray one slam away from making l

New list:

1. Fed
2. Laver
3. Budge
4. Tilden
5. Kramer
6. Gonzales
7. Rosewall
8. Sampras

I think these 8 are pretty much the top 8. Then 9-16:

9. Borg
10. Nadal
11. Lendl
12. Vines
13. Perry
14. Connors
15. Agassi
16. Johnny Mac

I'm also thinking of moving Riggs ahead of Perry. Ahhh, I could alter this list all day and night, but I think I've got the best 55 ever, the order is up to subjection.

Kramer didn't like being moved up, his picture link is not working anymore. Gonzales didn't like being moved down, his picture is also gone...
Fixed :D

Don't be a mug Groove. I respected you and this thread. You can't move him bcs of 2 seasons and bcs WWII messed with his career and bcs of some book. Why is he better than Sampras who has 14 Slams and he has 5?? Maybe if he played in those year, he would get injured and not win and GS. You can't know that. This list suppose to be a sorted by achievements, not your likings of some books.

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 players ever (Murray one slam away from making l

Fortunately, we have the Open Era now, and records are easier to track. In my following list, be advised that some players like Rosewall, Laver, and Newcombe, whose careers spanned Open and Pre-Open Era, their numbers are only from Spring 1968, only Open Era.

Open Era, strictly slam numbers, I know there are other stats, but just to make it easy:

1. Federer- 17 slams
2. Sampras- 14 slams
3. Borg- 11 slams
4. Nadal- 11 slams
5. Lendl- 8 slams
6. Connors- 8 slams
7. Agassi- 8 slams
8. McEnroe- 7 slams
9. Wilander- 7 slams
10. Becker- 6 slams
11. Edberg- 6 slams
12. Laver- 5 slams including CYGS
13. Djokovic- 5 slams
14. Newcombe- 5 slams
15. Rosewall- 4 slams
16. Vilas- 4 slams
17. Courier- 4 slams
18. Ashe- 3 slams
19. Guga- 3 slams
20. Kodes- 3 slams
21. Nastase- 2 slams
22. Hewitt- 2 slams
23. Smith- 2 slams
24. Kafelnikov- 2 slams
25. Rafter- 2 slams
26. Safin- 2 slams

Budge was a beast.

They have them bcs they respect are overestemate players they played against. You bet that when they are all retired Nadal will say Djokovic was in top10 players ever, Novak will say Rafa is in top3, they will even put Murray in top20. I'm not saying Kramer or Budge were bad, just look at it this way: Fed is the GOAT. Rafa owns Fed. And if tomorrow Fed and Novak say 'Rafa is the best player who ever lived' would you put Rafa as no1??
And budges 10 Slams and CYGS < Sampras' 14 Slams IMO, but that's IMO. 14 Slams > 5 Slams is not IMO, that's a fact
Oh, you mean Kramer? Yes he did only win 5 slams, but in those days, it was more lucrative on the pro tour to play barnstorming sessions. From 46-52, he owned everyone. Riggs, what was left of Budge, Segura, Gonzales, and Sedgman.

As for Budge over Sampras, this is also subjective, but I'm giving it to Budge.

I am quite sure uxyzapenje was wondering more about Kramer's ascent than Budge's. I too have Kramer lower down. More like where he was on your list yesterday. So - can you convice us as to why he deserves better?
Kramer set the standard for tennis post WW2  His long tours where he was clearly superior to all challengers is proof enough, in my opinion.

I am not expert on tennis history but having someone as random as Kramer in the top 8 is incorrect. His previous ranking of 21 is more accurate IMHO. Obviously, this is still Groove's thread, so he can have Young as #1
Kramer is random? A player who was #1 in the World for 4 years is random? The guy who was basically the father of modern pro tennis is random? The guy has a tennis racket named after him for fuck's sake and you call him random?

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 players ever (Murray one slam away from making l

Ok Grovee, I get that you put Budge over Sampras. But Kramer over Sampras (and other like Borg or Nadal)? 5 Slams is 5 Slams. It's (almost) 3 times less than Sampras...
Come on, now, slams is not everything. Kramer was #1 for 4 years, the same as Borg and Nadal combined.

I've put Sampras back over Kramer.

Ranking those days (and until well into the open era) were shit. I mean look at Vilas who dominated the '77 season, had the longest winning streak in history of the sport, won 2 Slams and still wan't the no1 (by todays ranking system he would be)

If 14 Slams is not > 5 Slams, then fuck it, I have Djokovic as no3 on my list...
It's not ALL about slams, mate. If it was, then Rosewall would be #1 all time, with his 23 slams, but he never won Wimbledon.

And Djoko at 3, now you trollin'.

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 players ever (Murray one slam away from making l

Good point

I remember reading that in 1988 the winner of the Italian Open only received 3 more ranking points 203-200 compared to the finalist.

Anyone remember Kafelnikov getting to no.1 after a 7 loss streak

1977 and Vilas is one thing, I completely agree there, but there was nothing wrong with the ranking in 1999. Nobody deserved #1 more than Kafelnikov at that particular moment. His closest rival at the time, Sampras, played poorly throughout the same period, until he won Queens and relegated Kafelnikov. Then he himself was relegated by Agassi after Wimbledon.

Carpet would have been epic

Sampras v Becker was always great. Those two would destroy Nadal and Djokovic in 1R
Borg v Edberg would have been epic, McEnroe would take Federer IMO, another classic.
Lendl was Great on carpet, v Budge would have been fun

Very unlucky draw for some. Federer out in RG R1? Ouch! In W, you have Sampras beating Djokovic, Becker and Laver just to get to the SF, while Fed will have to dispose of McEnroe and Borg to reach the same stage. Tough!
No mug draws here!

I'm not sure about Djokovic and Nadal taking Indoor giants Pete and Boris into 5 sets though

And yeah, maybe this Indoor tournament would have been best of all.. Pro players played almost whole career Indoors (night by night) and put them with greatest Indoor Open era players for some real tennis. No tie breaks or shits, go and make break to win set

Giving Nole and Rafa the benefit of the doubt, no way they'd win, though.

We should have Isner-Mahut as an exhibition indoors, 167-165 5th set

Becker def. Connors in 5

F:

Becker def. Lendl in 5, could go either way.

The Open Era indoor event would be insane!

The rest of the players would ask for them to get banned from future GOAT tournaments just bcs of that match of the poorest quality (for their stanrds). Nadal and Borg would just feel emberresed for Mumpras not being able to watch such a match... It would be a last WC for Mandy

Murray would be a matchup in hell for Sampras, dont think Sampras would beat him in AO, maybe not even in Usopen.

Agreed. Hewitt would like wise be utter hell for post peak Laver and Rosewall IMO.

Budge is Gunna rip up his quarter.

Sampras won Rome on slow clay. Come back to me when Mandy wins a clay masters title. The guy is one of the biggest clay clowns I have ever seen, given his movement. He plays on clay like it's hard court. Simply awful.

Did you even watch that tournament? It was playing ultrafast, just because some nostalgitards repeat over and over again that clay was slower back then doesnt mean it was always the case. What next, you are going to say RG 96 and 99 was slow?

Give me a break, the final between Becker and Sampras didnt resemble claycourt tennis in any way.

Sorry, but you're only going on achievements. You should go on technical ability and off court antics. Bill Tilden shouldn't even be talked about after his 'antics' and shouldn't be on that list.

Technical ability?

Rios, Nalbandian and Safin would all be elevated quite far if we counted that. But we don't.

Sapeod is really finding some form recently. I sense he's peaking for the AO. God help us if Murray were to actually do the incredible and win his 2nd slam in succession.

It would put CYGS fever at an all time high. Even higher than in 08 and 12 from the Djoker brigade.
