this will become the mother of all sports quests in modern sports. it will be known going forward simply as "The Quest".

can he snatch a total of 100 titles before he hangs up his racquets? is that a viable goal for him to have?

and also what about 20 slams now that 17 are in the bag?

i know he wants slams but slams dont come easy after 30. he will be one of the exceptions obviously if it happens. where do you see his best chance at another slam? could it be on the u.s. open surface?

somebody won a french open at 31 for instance? what was his name? that is your question of the day. here is a hint: he was 6 foot 5 and he was a left hander.

muscles (rosewall) was making the finals of slams at some ridiculous old age. so if you have the talent and you can keep up on the fitness front you can certainly show up in the finals of slams.

Love the change of the title, 100 titles needs 20 slams like a hand needs a glove.

I think him getting 20 slams is more realistic than 100 titles.

Depends where his focus lies. His goal was to win Wimbledon again (check), get back to #1 (check), and win gold in the Olympics (TBC). Now that he has (pretty much) accomplished this, will his attention switch to chasing Connor's record of most titles won?

He spoke of this at the French Open (wanting to catch it), and he also said he plans to play until 2016 so, assuming his body holds up, it is within the realms of possibility.

Currently he sits on 75 titles, and Connors' record is 109. So to overtake it, he needs to win another 35 tournaments. Or, to be second on the list of most titles won (currently Lendl, on 94) he needs to win another 20.

Remember that next year (in his 31st year), none of the Masters tournaments are mandatory for him - so if he didn't care about his ranking so much, he could potentially play some of the smaller tournaments (with a much better chance of winning) in their place. Rome, Miami, Canada, Shanghai, Paris-Bercy are the tournaments he would be likely to discard from his schedule.

In 2014 he could, even, choose to play just the smaller tournaments and the slams (I doubt he'll ever want to stop playing these until he retires). That way he could add titles from Chennai, Montpellier, Marseille, maybe Munich, Queens, Eastbourne, Newport, go back to Hamburg, play another home tournament in Gstaad, St. Petersburg, Thailand, Japan, Stockholm, etc.

If, for the next two years, he wins six or seven titles (say up to 90 by the end of 2014), then that would leave him with 20 more to get in his final two years in order to claim the all-time record.

That is just feasible, in my opinion, but only if he drops the Masters and plays a lot more of the 250/500 tournaments. If he plans to keep a similar schedule to his current one for the next four years, then no way -- he must recognize that he will no longer (surely by his 33rd birthday) be able to compete at the very highest level, and therefore instead, go all-out in the lower tournaments if he wants to push his tally beyond Connor's.

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

Federer is now 853-192, do you think Federer will get to 900 wins before he gets to 200 losses?

He is 46-6 this year, if he ends the year as good as he started he should not lose 8 matches as all tournaments will suit him even better at the end of the year. Olympics, Cincy, Usopen, Shanghai, 2-3 indoor tournaments.

He should find nr900 around AO next year.

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

Only a 100? He can win much more than THAT.
Getting to 100 would be like climbing up to the height in MT Everest where you have less than 10% of your journey left and you are above the clouds and you can see the top , but you are not at the very top.

So, yeah. When you see Connor's 109 at your reach you can just aswell give it a try even if you are 37 and tired as hell.

On the other hand I dont think Federer would ever lose any sleep over this record.

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

He can reach. He is a Motivated a Naturally Driven guy. No Doubt he will keep it going. I can see another Couple of Slams in him.

Even in his interview he said he has worked harder than before in the last couple of years.

Connors Agassi all were pretty good in their thritys and we are now talking about Roger Federer.

he surely can do it.

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

100 seems a long shot, possible but i think he will end up breaking Ivan Lendl's 94 as for Connors it seems a bit out of reach unless he starts playing those 250's like Connors himself did to reach 109 mark

as for slams, i always believed US open was and still is his Best shot to rack up more slams...so maybe 2 US and 1 wimby he can squeeze in...so realistically 20 seems more plausible than 100 at the moment

Loving the new title Clay Death. I feel 20 is out of reach personally, 19 is my maximum estimation with 1 USO and 1 Wimbledon. Though who knows for sure, I was becoming resigned to 16 at some points (Im ashamed).

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

Since this thread started (I believe it was after he won Rotterdam), Fed won Dubai, M1000 IW, M1000 Madrid and Wimbadannn.

Where's the jinx?

He returned to world number one and defeated players like Nadal, Djokovic, Murray (x2) during those tournaments I mentioned.

Where's the jinx?

There was an interview in which he was asked the same question by the journalist about 100 titles. It was eerie actually. Maybe the journalist is a MTF member

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

A lot of people said that breaking Sampras's record and winning RG would be enough for them. I never thought like that. However, with this latest success and all the consequences like world #1 and record Wimbledon titles it brings makes me satisfied with Fed's career as it is. If he stops tomorrow, I won't mind.

However, that's probably because I know he'll aim for even more and I'll get to enjoy his free-flowing excellence and fighting spirit for many years to come, save for a freak injury.

i am usually 20 steps ahead of the press general shanks. for instance, i am the one who said over 4 years ago that nole was the future #1.

you can always check with general viruzzz. he will gladly verify it.

by the way we have a new fed fan at the castle. you can meet him next time you are at the castle.

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

Nice title change.

I think 20 GS are possible, but 100 titles are probably out of reach. The problem is, if he aims for 100 titles he will need to play a lot of minor tournaments, and given his age, it will break down his body.

Re: Roger Federer : The Quest For 20 Slams and 100 Titles

And this is how the quest for 20 began! RG 1999, ranked 111, got a WC into the MD, lost to Rafter in R1
"This is why this guy is going to be good for the game. He has this sort of arrogance, he's got a bit of a smile about him, he's gonna relate to crowds as his personality develops, as he gets more confident about his position on the professional circuit"

it gives the fed fans a great topic to discuss generalito.

i believe this will be the greatest visionary thread ever at MTF.

and we are giving it to the guy who has 17 majors.
