He'll probably play two events: Rome and RG.

He never stopped being motivated. That was pure speculations on behalf of some posters here. In fact, he was planning to go to the gym the next day after LC and to arrive to Shanghai early to start practicing ASAP.

As for the next year, as long as his health permits, he'll put a helluva effort during the off season again, working like a mad man on his fitness. If everything goes according to plans, more wonderful things should happen in 2018. Stay tuned!

I will be shocked if he doesnt skip the entire clay season again. He will be close to 37 during RG 2018 and if there is something his body doesnt need is a packed calendar that involves a lot of grinding.

it is the prophesy so it shall come to pass:

#20 will happen at Wimbledon if not a little sooner at the Australian Open.

if there is an opening in Melbourne, Federer will capitalize on it.

I just cant see nole and andy coming back strong so quickly. they will need a few tournaments under their belts to find their traction.

Federer needs to be healthy first and foremost.
Shanghai would be a good way to make the #1 race interesting, but don't overplay for it!

Pat Cash says that Roger is the man to beat in 2018:

I am very interested to see if Federer allows his competitive sense to completely override common sense.

Slow as ass claycourt season is a strict no-no. But its up to him. Lets see.
Almost sounds like a jinx attempt.
Let's not exaggerate. He's not 76 years old, of whom you'd almost expect to accidentally slip and break his hip, because of low bone density. Obviously, there's wear and tear and the risk of injuries is somewhat increased due to it. But the "default" reason why ageing athletes retire is not because their bodies start falling apart all of a sudden, but because in a game of slim margins even a little loss in muscle and speed costs them their competitive edge.

He knows what's the real state of his health is and made it clear how much staying healthy after tennis is important to him (his career aside, he's still a young man, you know...). We should just trust his judgement and stop pretending we know better. We don't.

I think he will play RG next year.
He'll have a good chance there I think
