Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

Not the best couple of tournaments for Goffin, losing matches he should have won easily...
Looks like he'll have to forget about that top10 for a while if he keeps playing like this..

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

So I just saw a surprising result:

Boodles Exhibition: Goffin def. Djokovic 6-3 7-5
I know it's just an exhibition, but with Goffin's record against top 10, that's still pretty surprising and a lot more reassuring for Wimbly than his preparation tournaments. Seems he wasted two (easy) MP but then played an amazing point to get 3 MP and finishes it.

(article in Dutch and at the bottom video of the match with commentary in English: Goffin klopt Djokovic voor het eerst in demonstratiewedstrijdje)

Totally forgot Goffin had a match today. Came here and saw that scoreline. The good thing is that Goffin is showing some fighting spirit and doesn't give up. Great to see.

The rest of the tournament will be intersting.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

Well that was a close one... Saving 1 MP he beats Verdasco. A match with some very good shots and some really terrible ones. Overall not consistent but good enough when it counted.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

Goffin's net game needs serious improvement.

As one of the most creative players currently on tour, I fully understand he's probably more confounded by choices than other players when he has to close the point, but dear David, at that point, the only thing that matters is closing the deal. All you have to do is hit it as hard and fast as you can away from the player instead of feeding a sitter to the opponent so he can start a new rally. Novak had already given up. Winning that point should have turned the whole match around. Instead losing that point played on your mind and you served weakly and lost the tiebreak. Hope this lesson goes deep into him, and he doesn't make the same mistake in the future. With top players, its these little errors that can cost the match as it did.

Who knows how motivated David would have been if he'd won the 1hr 15 min long first set? In the second set, he looked clearly jaded.

Secondly, with regards to another aspect of his net game, somehow is timing and body position didn't look good at all. I don't know if its a technical problem (not able to change grips?) but his volleys (apart from that gorgeous drop volley) sucked.

---

Apart from net game, his endurance still needs some work should he desire to hang around the top ten for long. He has the game, but he needs the body to go with it.

---

Still, very proud with all he has achieved so far this season. The victory over Stan has surely lifted his confidence. Hopefully a few more such wins and his mental strength should improve by several notches.

Thanks for a fab IW-Miami run, David!!!

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

Because there is usually a seperate thread for all his matches, here are the ones from Miami and IW:

IW R2: David Goffin d. Frances Tiafoe
IW R3: David Goffin d. Guido Pella
IW R4: David Goffin d. Stan Wawrinka
IW QF: David Goffin d. Marin Cilic
IW SF: Milos Roanic d. David Goffin

Miami R2: David Goffin d. Marcel Granoller
Miami R3: David Goffin d. Viktor Troicki
Miami R4: David Goffin d. Horacio Zeballos
Miami QF: David Goffin d. Gilles Simon
Miami SF: Novak Djokovic d. David Goffin

About today's match: Goffin was doing very well in the first, but collapsed a bit in the second while Novak was the other way around. Especially on important points Goffin failed to win the points in both sets. Both had trouble with the heat it seemed, but Goffin will reach his highest ranking so far when the new rankings are published! Let's hope he'll continue in his good form and get some more top10 wins.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

He actually played a good match against Raonic today. I really enjoy the way he plays. Too bad he didn't win. It basically came down to a (really) bad service game in the first and third set.

I'm really excited for what's next. With some good draws he could go far in other tournaments as well.

I was really impressed that he hasnt imploded after that win against Wawrinka. I'm very happy for him though. He deserves it, though that obviously wasn't his best match and certainly not Wawrinka's. His win against Cilic immediately after must have given him an extra confidence boost. Next is another beatable but obviously though opponent, so I'm looking forward to see if he can keep it up.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

I didn't see this one but I'm a little disappointed but not surprised that it wasn't closer. Only 2 BPs in the match (1 converted) vs 3/10 for Berdych and 6-3 6-4 is just not good enough. I wanted him to take at least 1 set.
But at least he lost against a top10 player this time..

And there it is, lost the TB 75 after barely holding 1 point on serve.

now TB to decide the match. I give Goffin 20% to win it.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

This is probably one of the most deciding games in the match.. David coming back from 0-40 to A to losing/winning the game after all at 4-4 in the deciding set. Saving at least 5 BPs along the way.

Grr he really is such a slow starter and he can't afford it..
Doing better now.
