Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

His match against Federer is scheduled as the second one from the evening session. That's good for us Belgian viewers.

I just don't see him winning against Federer. If he does it would be a huge upset. But as long as he plays a good match and it's not 6-2 6-0 6-3 I will be happy.

Wow! What an incredible match! His level came out of nowhere!
Such a great win cause Thiem was playing excellent as well.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

Gotta say, I'm simutaniously watching Nishikori-Krajicek and that's still a whole other level. Pretty sure Krajicek would have won against a lot of players today, but Nishikori just a little too good. Not sure if Goffin would have been on the other side that he would have won as well.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

he started off weak again, behind a break, but the last few point, to win his service game were nice.
Then Dzumhur making a few bad mistakes, DF, handing Goffin 3 break points and now back on serve at 2-2
Now a good service game. Seems to get into the match now.
Luckily not as hot today as the heat and Goffin don't mix.
Nice point from Dzumhur to work away the first break point. Another chance for Goffin. And he finishes it. Now Goffin with the break.
Had a couple of good points to take the 40-15 lead but gave it away to 40-40. Now a UE from Dzumhur and A for Goffin. Another bad return from Dzumhur and Goffin escapes.
Bad service game from Goffin now, losing the break. 5-4*
He keep hitting UEs anytime he has just set up his point, mostly with his FH, but then hits a couple of good ones and breaks back. First set is in!

Didn't start well in the second.. 0-30 on his serve. Now a couple of good points to get back in the game: 40-30, only to hit the next one just next to the line: Deuce. A good point followed by 2 bad. Breakpoint Dzumhur and converted.
Now 3 good points and breakpoint for Goffin. but we are going to deuce. A UE from Dzumhur and A for Goffin, 2nd breakpoint. Again far out from Goffin. Another UE and A for Dzumhur.
He's making Goffin run and Goffin just keeps piling up the mistakes. 0-2
A very nice dropshot from Dzumhur to start Goffin's service game. 0-15. His serve isn't anywhere near where it has to be and he isn't solid enough in the rallies.
Another good dropshot 15-30. 15-40 and 2 breakpoints again. There is that serve again, an ace! 1 BP to go. UE from Dzumhur, Deuce. A very good serve with an easy return, but then made the wrong choice, A for Dzumhur. Back to deuce. Another beautiful point from Dzumhur and Goffin is getting the run around on his own serve. Broken again. 0-3

2 good points from Goffin, but just too inconsistent. Back to 30-30. Another one of those dropshots. Goffin gets there but Dzumhur finishes it. Game Dzumhur, now 0-4. Goffin
0-40 again on his own serve. He tried to go to the net, but just doesn't win those points. 15-40 but then broken again. 0-5 and a bagel in the making. Looks like he's not even going to try to get the 0 off. There we go 0-6 and 1 set all

If you want to see beautiful tennis, this definitely isn't the match to be. Only 3 winners from Goffin and around 10 for Dzumhur. Both double digit UEs though.

And in style: the first point of the third: a UE for Goffin. 0-15. A couple of good serves, finally, 30-30 and another dropshot for a breakpoint. A break for Dzumhur again..
Now Goffin breaks back thanks to some bad points from Dzumhur.
Fails to finish it again on his own serve, deuce. Again 2 stupid faults and break by Dzumhur.
An easy service game for Dzumhur for a 3-1 lead.

Goffin seems to be struggling with the heat again. Now deuce on *4-1. A Dzumhur.

I'm going to stop watching now, this is just too ugly.

An overall bad match from Goffin so far. It'd help if he could win some fast points on his serve, but his first is almost always out and his second isn't worth to be named a serve.
We'll see how that ends in a few hours.

Came back a little ago at 4-2 in the fourth. Surprised to see Goffin had won the Third and was leading a break. He seemed to play a lot better in the few points I saw in the end, especially the serve. Though he became sloppy again on the first match point, letting it go back to A on Dzumhur's serve, but eventually converting the second match point.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

yeah, i agree. good that he won but a shaky performance. he'll need to do better. he's not playing well so far this year

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

He won!
Didn't look good in the beginning, losing the first set while not playing very good tennis. Second set was a bit better, but still very shaky with a lot of UEs and frustration.
He got better toward the end, with some really nice shots. Stakhovsky had a medical time-out, but played afterwards, didn't see any tape so don't know why he had the time-out.
Stakhovsky had some really nice shots as well, mostly when he was at the net in the beginning.

If David wants to get far here, he'll need to improve on his service games. Towards the end it was a lot better, but especially his second serve was way too easy to hit back.
You could also see that a good service game gave him the confidence to play more agressive while a bad service game made for a shaky next game as well.

Kellemanske Did anyone see his Kooyong final match?
He beat Lopez convincingly if you look at the scoreboard which was to me a bit surprising as I would have expected a closer match. Unfortunately I didn't see it so I can't say if Lopez was just playing terrible or if Goffin was playing well, but at least he'll come into the AO with confidence.

Goffin lost in 3 sets.. Did anyone see it? 6-7(5) 6-4 3-6.
I didn't see the match, apparently Pouille played well, but still as a top20 player, Goffin really should have been able to handle that.

Re: David Goffin's Match Discussion Thread

pouille could be a tricky one but he should still win

Wow, great news! I was a bit worried about this one as he already has one loss against Thomaz on HC.

Yeah, Goff needs to start channeling the inner Wawrinka while playing top guys. I am not going to write him off like the folks at GM but he'll surely need to toughen up more, and get used to focusing from the word GO. I'd like to see him start regretting losing even the smallest of points, steady his nerves, and technically (though he is sound) improve more on his serves and returns.

Most important is athleticism - more stamina - enjoy a diet that helps keep it on the long run, because there's no challenging the top guys without going to three sets in BO3 and 4-5 sets in BO5. They leave everything on court. He must too.

Mission 2016:

1. Increase stamina, energy during matches.
2. Decrease chokes, control nerves.
3. Always win the matches he's expected to win. No losing to top players past their prime. And start to regularly win against his own peer group. The last isn't always going to be possible but this is the one that counts the most.

Positives from 2015:

1. Our man thinks on court. He's not a ball-basher, not a pusher. Has loads of shots, and keeps varying them according to situation and the opponent he faces. Great to see that tennis intelligence

2. Self-knowledge - he knows his own physical frame, the strengths and weaknesses of his game, and plays by his strengths. His introspective nature will pay off in the long run. Also, he shows great patience and poise.

3. His forehand when he's on, is Federeresque to say the least; Dimi can only try

Here's wishing everybody posting and lurking a Happy 2016 and lets hope David gives us lots to cheer for!

(And I hope more members besides Gliese and myself come to comment during Goff's matches. Last few months here have been a ghost forum)

well, were still doing better than nishikori's forum. that place hasnt even had activity since october 17th.

i agree with your assesment. i will say that he's usually reliable to beat players below him but he has to find a way to start winning those matches against top guys. he has shown he can push them and that he can but failed mentally. i feel if he can improve that he'll start turning the close matches to wins

Kellemanske Haha I only joined a few days ago but I will try to post regularly. I have't been following men's tennis for long and beside some tennis lessons when I was young I don't know that much about tennis. But as a sports fan and fellow Belgian you can't not be a David fan ?
I agree on most of what you say. We can always see that he gives up too soon which is why he never came back from a 0-2 set before and in this last one against Andy it was very obvious that Andy went for all the balls even the impossible ones while David just let them go. Part of that is probably conserving energy but it makes a difference in some the important points.
