Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

O'Connell and Smith both lose their respective semi finals to higher ranked opponents both 7/5 in the third. Damn. Both very close to finals.

Nice to see Chris finally showing what he can do - saw him a while back and thought he had it, but somehow it hasn't happened...until now. Hope he gets another win tonight!

Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

Ive watched a few of his matches on the stream, i cant work out really work out a particular strength, but this is really good for his ranking especially at the ed of the year coming into AO Quallies, he didnt even get a WC last year, really surprising for him well done!

Also JP Smith in the semi's i cant believe how low he has dropped this year 300 odd so.... he needs wins and points badly!

Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

O'Connell is into the semis now after beating #245 Lamasine 6-1 6-2 and #280 Safranek 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1. Up to 281 on the live rankings now after this result and he picked up a few futures titles in Serbia recently too. And a random fact: Kubler won this tournament in Sibiu back in 2014

Thompson went down to the big-serving Ernesto Escobedo in Lexington, too. Bit of a disappointment from Jordan, particularly as the Olympics means that he won't be able to add anything to his ranking before all those points he accumulated in the last three months of 2015 start coming off...
I agree with Duckworth, Barton and Whittington and I would add in Marc Polmans who has been in terrific form as well.

Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

This second half of the year is a pretty exciting time for him - he has 16 points to defend for the rest of the year, and with this quarter final result in Lexington he's already scored 15 of them. He needs just over 100 more points to crack the top 150, which would be quite an achievement considering where he started the year

#235 Nguyen is next, who took out second seed Jaziri

And Whitts keeps the winning streak going, getting up in three set 76(4) 46 64 over 22 year-old Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan (ATP196).
In a high ranking Challenger it is going to be tough progressing further, but he is getting the right results at the right time, and his ranking is improving rapidly.

De Minaur got done 6-4 6-4 by Marchenko

Whittington bounced back from his collapse against Purcell, beating #115 Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3 6-2. Impressive, he just keeps on winning. If he keeps this form up he'd have to be a contender for the US Open WC surely

Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

Alex De Minuar has qualified for the challenger in Segovia, Spain, and will face Marchenko in the first round.

Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

^Yeah, I thought the fact he was qualifying for challengers was good, let alone winning challengers There are only three players younger than Max ahead of him in the rankings now - Duckhee Lee, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Wimbledon winner Shapovalov. Hopefully he can build on this, unlike Mott earlier this year
