Re: John Peers

Here's the ATP article, but it's pretty much all about Kontinen.

Re: John Peers

And with defeat of Bryans by Sock-Monroe today, Kontinen moves to doubles no 1; Peers to no 2! Congrats boys.

But the Bryans did play. They lost to Kyrgios and Zimonjić in round one. Nice win by the way Nick.
Glad to know someone is still alive in this forum!

Yes it was strange about the Bryans - weren't on the posted entry list, but presumably that was just a mistake. And yes pity they went down.

But maybe in Miami...as Mahut defending title points there, and Peers-Kontinen none, so the forecast actually has them moving up to one and two in the rankings in three weeks in any case.

In the meantime, career high of three in the world is nothing to sneeze at, though another masters title or two would be nice!

If not IW, likely to be pretty soon, all things being equal...the 5W forecast has them overtaking the Bryans at Miami (though the twins can potentially defend their points, they are playing that one).

Exciting...

Re: John Peers

The boys now sitting at 2 (Kontinen) &3 (Peers) respectively, career highs for both. With Mahut-Herbert out courtesy of Djokovic/Troiki, would be great if they get this one...need to make the finals to get 1&2.

Re: John Peers

And good to see John finally getting some recognition for it in local media - Linda Pearce's bias against doubles is extraordinary (didn't even mention Jordan's title with Kokk in a piece on his great summer run in context of DC win yesterday), but at least now has finally put up something substantive on John:

John Peers seeks to extend doubles run at Kooyong Davis Cup tie against Czechs

Pretty evident though, that she hasn't really bothered to look at his actual results for herself - how hard would it be to point out that this is easily the best doubles team in the world at the moment, beating the current no 1s (Mahut/Herbert) twice in recent months in order to win both Paris Masters and WTFs, current no 2 team and Bryans three times in recent months.

And more generally, how hard would it be to mention that four teams of the eight teams in the race to London include Aussies. Highly unlikely to last of course but still...

Re: John Peers

What a pair! Last four events:
Paris W
WTF W
Brisbane R1
AO W

Even though it broke the streak, I'm kind of glad singles experts Thiem and Nishikori edged them in Brisbane. I'm not sure if Kokkinakis-Thompson would been able to handle them in the potential final and Kokkinakis needed the title much more.

Re: John Peers

And a first grand slam title, wonderful achievement. Peers-Kontinen looking fantastic, untouchable at the moment. Fantastic tennis, and looking forward to a great year...

Re: John Peers

And (finally) a nice article on the win from Pearce in Fairfax (and with a picture of the two, guess not the photographers fault that they don't exactly look elated...!):

Quote:
London: Australia has its first champion at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals since the second of Lleyton Hewitt's consecutive successes in 2002, after Victorian John Peers partnered Henri Kontinen of Finland to win the doubles title at London's O2 Arena.

The curtain-raiser to the singles showdown between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic was the main event for the lower-profile form of the game, the youngest of the eight doubles teams capping their first joint season with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory against Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram.

The last time an Australian raised the year-end championship trophy it was, in fact, hoisted by two: Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, in 1996. The Woodies finished their association after sharing 11 grand slam titles. Peers and Kontinen - the latter having won this year's Wimbledon mixed title with Heather Watson - will at the Australian Open be among the favourites for their first.

"I feel we both started to really work hard and know what we can do as a team," said Peers, 28. "It's been good for us to be able to build throughout the year. We've both had ups and downs, but the good thing is we've kept building, kept building. Results have really started to click and happen at the back end of the year, so it's been really positive for us."...

Peers and fiance Danielle Montgomery were due to fly to their home in Perth tomorrow for a brief stopover before heading to Melbourne to finish preparations for their wedding on Saturday. "Probably my duty will be to actually do a few more things than what I've actually done for the wedding," the groom admitted. "I'll have to try to organise things. Then the Newcombe Medal will be after that on the Monday. Then we'll go off on the honeymoon on Tuesday. Quick turnaround. But it will be fun. [I'm] looking forward to it."
Has to be a lock for the Newk now...

Re: John Peers

What a clutch result, and fab way to end the year - they've been on fire since that Shanghai final.

Now relax have a nice wedding John!
