Re: John Peers

And good to see John finally getting some recognition for it in local media - Linda Pearce's bias against doubles is extraordinary (didn't even mention Jordan's title with Kokk in a piece on his great summer run in context of DC win yesterday), but at least now has finally put up something substantive on John:

John Peers seeks to extend doubles run at Kooyong Davis Cup tie against Czechs

Pretty evident though, that she hasn't really bothered to look at his actual results for herself - how hard would it be to point out that this is easily the best doubles team in the world at the moment, beating the current no 1s (Mahut/Herbert) twice in recent months in order to win both Paris Masters and WTFs, current no 2 team and Bryans three times in recent months.

And more generally, how hard would it be to mention that four teams of the eight teams in the race to London include Aussies. Highly unlikely to last of course but still...

Brilliant result for them, first slam

Re: John Peers

What a pair! Last four events:
Paris W
Brisbane R1

Even though it broke the streak, I'm kind of glad singles experts Thiem and Nishikori edged them in Brisbane. I'm not sure if Kokkinakis-Thompson would been able to handle them in the potential final and Kokkinakis needed the title much more.

Re: John Peers

And a first grand slam title, wonderful achievement. Peers-Kontinen looking fantastic, untouchable at the moment. Fantastic tennis, and looking forward to a great year...

Re: John Peers

And (finally) a nice article on the win from Pearce in Fairfax (and with a picture of the two, guess not the photographers fault that they don't exactly look elated...!):

London: Australia has its first champion at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals since the second of Lleyton Hewitt's consecutive successes in 2002, after Victorian John Peers partnered Henri Kontinen of Finland to win the doubles title at London's O2 Arena.

The curtain-raiser to the singles showdown between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic was the main event for the lower-profile form of the game, the youngest of the eight doubles teams capping their first joint season with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 victory against Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram.

The last time an Australian raised the year-end championship trophy it was, in fact, hoisted by two: Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge, in 1996. The Woodies finished their association after sharing 11 grand slam titles. Peers and Kontinen - the latter having won this year's Wimbledon mixed title with Heather Watson - will at the Australian Open be among the favourites for their first.

"I feel we both started to really work hard and know what we can do as a team," said Peers, 28. "It's been good for us to be able to build throughout the year. We've both had ups and downs, but the good thing is we've kept building, kept building. Results have really started to click and happen at the back end of the year, so it's been really positive for us."...

Peers and fiance Danielle Montgomery were due to fly to their home in Perth tomorrow for a brief stopover before heading to Melbourne to finish preparations for their wedding on Saturday. "Probably my duty will be to actually do a few more things than what I've actually done for the wedding," the groom admitted. "I'll have to try to organise things. Then the Newcombe Medal will be after that on the Monday. Then we'll go off on the honeymoon on Tuesday. Quick turnaround. But it will be fun. [I'm] looking forward to it."
Has to be a lock for the Newk now...

Re: John Peers

What a clutch result, and fab way to end the year - they've been on fire since that Shanghai final.

Now relax have a nice wedding John!

Re: John Peers

Very close 3rd considering the previous sets, key break at 8-8

Re: John Peers

WTF Final: Kontinen H. / Peers J. d. Klaasen R. / Ram R. 2-6 6-1 10-8!

Go Peers!

Re: John Peers

Linda Pearce finally has something on Peers: ATP World Tour Finals 2016: John Peers flies Australian flag, reaches doubles final with Henri Kontinen

Honestly though, most of it is fluff about his upcoming nuptials - where is the tennis story?!

I'd like to know his insights into why they've suddenly managed to get it together after a year with mostly lesser results.

And how it felt to see his ranking plunge, and then rebuild; what has helped his game and (particularly) mentality (given those notable chokes last year not repeated this); how did it feel when Murray-Soares defeat by Klaassen-Ram in the semi-finals deprived his replacement of the year end number 1 ranking...(though I suspect Peers wouldn't be too forthcoming on this one!).

Also, why lots of picks of him with Groth, but none with Kontinen!

Re: John Peers

And into the tour finals!

Defeated the Bryans 7-6(2), 6-4.

What an amazing run - on 10 October John had dropped down to a ranking of 28, now he's back up to 9 live, and they are still on fire.

Good luck for the finals!

Re: John Peers

The dream run continues with a victory over Mahut-Herbert 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-4.

Takes John to 10 in the rankings, and with Lopez-Lopez defeat can go to 9 on a win in the semis, and end up 8 if they win it all.

Bryans up next in the semis, who they also defeated in Paris...

John seems a relatively unassuming character, so perhaps he prefers it that way. Certainly he and Kontinen are on a real hot streak at the moment, and I wish him every success in the latter stages of the WTF.
Maybe he prefers the quiet life, but would have thought rewards of better sponsorship deals etc would counterbalance that! But his management certainly aren't actively promoting him to the media.

In any case, last round robin match could be pretty interesting, play Mahut-Soares current number 1s (who they defeated at Paris) who are currently 0-2 but fighting for the chance to retain their number 1 ranking. If the the french team lose, its likely Murray-Soares will become year end 1 team.

Peers and Kontinen have already won their group but Peers needs to max out points for the tournament to get to 7. But regaining top ten basically depends on whether F/M Lopez advance and how far...', and they play after Peers-Kontinen, not before!

And if you ever doubted that he can really play, have a look at 2:21 in this:

Re: John Peers

And into the semis...still barely a passing mention in the media. Disgraceful.
