Re: Could Rafa Nadal be the male Navratilova

nadal is pathetic in doubles at best. dont get carried away.

he plays it from the baseline for one thing. and secondly, it is taking away the critical focus from his singles game.

i used to play doubles exactly the same way and i destroyed a lot of teams damn near single-handedly by blasting my deadly topspin forehands at them. i ran around a lot of backhands and killed them with my forehand alone. my topspin backhand was pretty much money also.

it never helped my doubles game or my singles game one single bit and i knew it. all i did was take care of my serve and then i stood around blasting topspin cyclones which they could not volley.

remember i said that i "stood around". it did not help my serve, my return, or even my baseline game. i could have had better workouts hitting against a wall. so i made a social occasion out of it. i used it to have fun but i did try to win unless i was playing mixed doubles.

it is how you choose to use the doubles so it can help your singles game. if it is not helping you or you go out of your way to make sure it does not help you in singles then it should be left alone. leave it to the doubles specialists.

Rafa Nadal: Doubles Specialist

Hey, it worked for Federer. The path to GOAThood lies in doubles.

Re: Could Rafa Nadal be the male Navratilova

Well Rafa definitely has a successful doubles career to fall back on if everything else fails. Him & Granollers took the first set 6-1 vs Karlovic/Cilic - broke 3 times and just over 20 mins. 100% first serve points won; 67% second serve; 67% total points won.

Now it may all go pear shaped in the next set - and I don't expect him to go deep here in doubles but given that this is the first time I think he's paired up with Granollers since probably juniors (I'm assuming they must have played together when on the junior DC team) it's not a bad start.

Re: Could Rafa Nadal be the male Navratilova

Nadal isn't as bad a volleyer as some here say he is but he's also not a good volleyer. A good volleyer uses their volleyes as a tactic in their games to their advantage and does so successfully.........Nadal only goes to the net when he feels certain he can win the point. And around 90% of his volleys are drop-volleys, usually with the BH. I don't think he's particularly good at punching volleys away when forced, I will say he does have good net positioning instincts, though. Playing doubles has made him better at the net than he was when he first came on tour.

Re: Could Rafa Nadal be the male Navratilova

I thought this thread was about winning 9 times at a slam. LOL.

I think Nadal might win 7 or even 8 times at RG. 9 times is pushing it. Even 8 times looks surreal.

And no, he won't win double titles at slams since he won't be playing those.

Re: Could Rafa Nadal be the male Navratilova

Nadal has good volleys, though he appears better than he actually is because he is very cautious coming in and usually only gets relatively easy volleys. I'd love to see him try chip & charge off second serve sometimes, just for the heck of it. He'd probably win the point simply because other guy would be too shocked to hit a pass.

Navratilova won 31 grand slam titles in doubles. So Rafa has some way to go. I believe Hewitt is only active male GS champion who has also won GS in doubles.

Zimonjic and Nadal on a doubles court. But hey, most good doubles is about apprenticeship.

But hopefully some of the other premiere players who have skills for both would be willing to play. Hewitt has one doubles GS and Federer and he gave Bjorkman and Rafter all that they could handle when they were just tots. It would be good to raise interest in the game although it might eat into the income of the average doubles specialist. (Or conversely, it could boost the prize money)

Should tie up with Zimonjic after he dumps Llodra No chance he goes after it seriously in a GS though, singles are too important. Maybe in a case he crashes out of singles early, but that's not very likely either.

he did not return this poorly since he was 15 years old.

and that is one of the things that is keeping him from winning titles. you cant win if you cant break serve.

and he almost always pushes or guides his volleys. other times he tries those chicken shit drop volleys.

so yes he cant volley.

dont listen to johnny mac when you can listen to me here.

mac is the same clown who said that nadal is a better volleyer than fed. mac is getting old so he cant see all that well.
Your negativity is unbearable. I bet you have never played tennis yourself. Rafa hasn't missed slam finals since ages, and won Roland Garros. He needs improvement to win more finals but that's it. There's no need to act like he's playing bad tennis cause this is not true. Especially that clay season is close and Rafa owns clay. Cheer for Rafa in Miami since you're in US instead of this negativity.
Volleys, he plays excellent volleys, not the traditional serve and volley cause he's not that player and playing the classical type nearly vanished but he can volley real good.
The return of serve has been a problem for all players lately cause all players are trying to improve their serves. He needs to train more on it, but again saying that he can't return is a stupid exaggeration.

Re: Could Rafa Nadal be the male Navratilova

This is a completely serious non-trolling comment and I can't believe that I am making it in a Nadal thread but here goes.

Nadal's volleys are underrated. He has such good hand-eye coordination that he can execute good volleys at the net, even if his technique is unorthodox. If he is perfectly willing to pursue doubles as an alternative career then all the power to him. He is not in the mold of McEnroe, Edberg and Rafter but he's still quite effective at what he does and he has two MS titles.

If he really wants to make a serious go of it and be a GS champ, he needs to tie up with a doubles specialist rather than his BFF Marc Lopez. Federer did this with Mirnyi when he was making a go of it in doubles and he learned a lot from the Beast of Belarus. He needs a player who compliments his game: somebody taller, harder to get broken and willing to cover the net when Rafa is in retriever mode. Lopez is good but he is not in GOAT contention like Paes, Nestor, Bhupathi, etc.

If he does it, good for him. He looks burnt out right now by all of his play and his scheduling but if he loves the game, why not? Navratilova was/is a machine who NEEDED tennis but Nadal may feel burnt out by the parental pressure. I hope he makes a good run at the doubles in London this year.

Signed, a purported "Nadal" hater who was branded as such because I compared him to Ben Stiller.
