Re: Matthew Barton Thread

I'm scratching my head at the moment trying to work out what Barts is doing schedule-wise. He pulled the pin on the rather ill-advised tactic of trying to qualify for every ATP tournament going in North America, came home for a bit and then did quite creditably at USO qualies (especially given that Jan Satral went on to win a round in the main draw).

But he's not playing in the Asian Challengers coming up...and I doubt his ranking is high enough to try for the East Asian ATP events...nor does he seem to be playing the first couple of post-USO American Challengers. Perhaps he'll do the Californian ones in October before coming home for the Aussie ones - either that, or he knows he only has 36 points left to defend and the body is telling him to play the year out sparingly...

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Perhaps - but Frank has had quite a decent run himself over recent weeks, so it's not as though Matt lost to some total scrub!

In the end, it was probably asking a bit much after his excellent Wimbledon for Barton to get to America, change to hard courts and start blitzing it on a dime. It's back to grass next week in Newport qualies, followed by Washington qualies, so the increased ranking will help give him more opportunities at top level qualification and should also ease the requirement for him to do Challenger qualies every week also.

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Dancevic has the worst 2nd serve, very disappointing tbh

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Matt gets to overcome the euphoria of Wimbledon by playing in the Winnetka Challenger, but the let-down is exacerbated by a first round loss to on-off Canadian player Frank Dancevic, losing 46 46.

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

I'm sure Matt will have some words now. Cool as in that fifth set, 14-12 winner
Great first Slam win.

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Yes Yes Yes
Barton wins and qualifies for Wimbledon.
Well done Matt and enjoy the occasion. What a buzz for him.

He beat the No.1 qualifying seed 20 year old Russian Karen Khachanov (ATP100) 76(1) 67(1) 62 63

And a good draw in the Main Draw too, up against another qualifier, 24 year old Italian Albano Olivetti (ATP791- this week, high rank of 161 in May 2016). A great opportunity for Matt to win and advance to the second round.

Go Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Great work there by Matt. Asserts his authority early and does not allow Arevalo back into the match in securing his place in the final round.
Now just the No.1 seeded qualifier between him and a match in the main draw at Wimbledon.
Go Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

And he did make the Wimbledon qualies - no wonder he lost in the qualifying at Nottingham.

And in the first round of Wimby qualifying:
Barton messes up the first set, drops serve when serving for the first set at 5-3, then loses a close tie-break 7-9, but knuckles down and wins the next two sets to progress to the second round of qualifying, beating the No.32 seed Marco Trungelliti (ATP 151) 67(7) 64 86.

Next up El Salvadorian Marcelo Arevalo (ATP217), so Matt has a good chance of making the final round.
Stay on it Matt.

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

But Matt fails to qualify at Nottingham, going down in the final round to No.1 seed Stephane Robert 75 63.
Hope Matt can make the qualies cut for Wimbledon as the numbers drop.

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

A bit disappointing considering he had the break a couple of times in the third, but good try Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

For a set there Matt was looking the goods, winning the first set 63 against Steponyournek, but then the experience of the aged came through, Stepanek coming back strong to take the second set 62 and then outlasting young Matt 7-5 in the 3rd to bundle Matt out of the qualifying.
A pity. A good showing for Matt, on not his best surface, although it was not Stepanek's best surface either.
Hope Matt will be on the grass courts of Europe.
Go Matty

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Matt gets through the first round of RG qualifying with a routine 63 63 win over Indian player Ramanathan. Picks up a few more valuable points and some touring money.
Now for the second round.. a toughie against ageing experienced veteran Radek Stepanek.
Go Matt
