Re: Matthew Barton Thread

A bit disappointing considering he had the break a couple of times in the third, but good try Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

For a set there Matt was looking the goods, winning the first set 63 against Steponyournek, but then the experience of the aged came through, Stepanek coming back strong to take the second set 62 and then outlasting young Matt 7-5 in the 3rd to bundle Matt out of the qualifying.
A pity. A good showing for Matt, on not his best surface, although it was not Stepanek's best surface either.
Hope Matt will be on the grass courts of Europe.
Go Matty

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Matt gets through the first round of RG qualifying with a routine 63 63 win over Indian player Ramanathan. Picks up a few more valuable points and some touring money.
Now for the second round.. a toughie against ageing experienced veteran Radek Stepanek.
Go Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Well, one cannot accuse Matt of strategic tanking as he loses a close R2 match in Seoul to Lacko 4-6 6-4 4-6 - but I'm sure he'll be glad of the chance to hop on a plane and head to Europe pronto!

Having defended all but 1 point from this week last year, Barts is now defending absolutely nothing until the last week of October, and has 8 more countable tournaments that can add to his ranking. Sitting at around 150 in the race currently, you'd like to think that body permitting he will at least better his CHR and break the Top 200.

Get out of Geneva quick!

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Well, TA have rectified ignoring Matt during the Aussie summer by giving him a QWC for Roland Garros. He's certainly deserved some sort of recognition for his efforts, although playing in Seoul today against a possibly tired Kravchuk is not really the ideal switch to clay preparation for him...

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Barton qualifies for Busan but can't get past another qualifier, albeit Jimmy Wang, in the first round, losing in straight sets.
Not what we were hoping for from Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Nearly came back in the TB, was down 2-5, then got to 5-5, but alas....

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Barton gets Socked in the second round, 26 67.
He pushed Jack in the second set, swopping breaks of serve with the YankTank before losing 5-7 in the 2nd set tie breaker.

Hope Barton is thirsty for more MD ATP action in the coming months

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Excellent Matt! It's really going well right now. Memories of Matt falling short with a CH of #201 make his performances this year even sweeter.

Now he's schooled some nextgen Americans, it's time to meet their leader, defending champ

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

Great result for Matt, beating 18 year old rising star Frances Tiafoe (ATP 174) 63 64.
That should give him some confidence.
Next round, up against Jack Sock, should be some big serving in that match...

Go Matt

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

I have to hand it to Matthew, he's done some really smart scheduling during the opening months of this season.

First, he heads to Auckland when everyone else is in Australia and takes advantage of a weak draw and sluggish Kudla and Johnson to probably get more rankings points than he would have any other way.

Then, he heads to America - and while he may not have had much success at Indian Wells or Drummondville, by hanging around he has managed to win the Calabasas futures and now qualify in Houston.

Really, the key thing for Barton is to find enough points by mid-May to keep in that 250-300 band where you get in to many of the weaker Challengers, because after that he is defending nothing for over 5 months (thanks to last year's ankle injury) so in his current form he can really zoom up those rankings if he stays fit.

Re: Matthew Barton Thread

R1 (Q) Barton Vs (WC) Tiafoe,

Not a bad R1, but frances loves the clay so will be tough to get the win
