On paper, it should be definitely Raonic. The higher ranked player isn't always seen as the favourite -- it's also the match-up issue as well.

Tsonga will have to play absolutely perfect if he is to win this. Any slip up and he's a goner. Otherwise he's just gotta pray for Milos to have a bad day.

Tsonga's poor returning may cost him this match. If Jo wants to win he needs to settle all sets before tie-breaks because Raonic will have the edge in the additional game.
That said, I'll go with the Frenchman in 4.

I really gota feeling it will be Raonic; he is playing well and I think he definitely may be more inspired playing for Canada than Tsonga is for France. Milos has more to prove, his country has more to prove. and seriously I just don't see Tsonga having much success handling the Raonic serve. very interesting matchup as both serve huge and both like to approach the net.

Tsonga moves better, Raonic serves better, Tsonga has better Variety/Groundstrokes, Raonic probably more efficient at the net, both generally seem to handle themselves well physically in matches.

on paper Tsonga, but I voted Raonic in 4 just a feeling, if he is serving well he definitely has this

If Milos wins this, France will be deflated, and the Canadian fans will be rocking and will carry Vasek to victory, book it

Milos will probably lose though

It doesn't matter how much of a long shot it is if a match is live you always play it. You don't just say no, what's the point, we not gonna win the other one anyway. That's an insanely stupid way of looking at things, and extremely pessimistic.

Do hcokey teams not play the 3rd period because they're down 5-0, and don't want to tire themselves out to lose anyway?

Do Baseball teams quit when they're down 11-1 in the 8th because they've got a day game the next day?

No.

Sure it would be great if he was rested for San Jose, but this is Davis Cup, and you don't quit until the other team has 3 wins. Even if it seems like a long shot. Milos has a bye in round 1 of San Jose anyway, and if he really felt like he'd be tired he wouldn't have scheduled an exhitibion in San Jose. And San Jose is only a 250 event. It's not like it's insanely critical he be rested.

Milos can win this match, though it is unlikely. And if he does, we're not out of it, Vasek usually plays well against higher ranked players(though he wasn't good against Tsonga). He beat Chela with the home crowd in Montreal last year. Took out Isner in Tokyo. And beat Sela while playing for Canada in Israel. Plus with Monfils' injury who knows exactly fit he will be, and if it's Benneteau, it wouldn't be impossible to pull that upset either.

It's just crazy to think that you would sub someone out of the 4th rubber because you're down 2-1, and you don't think you can win the last
Yeah, basically that. Not to mention that it's actually better for him if he plays it. When you look at it from the point of experience for the future, this match is way more important than whether he's fresh to play Tobias Kamke in a 250 event next week.

The poll results . It's like people forget that Raonic is a big server.

Tsonga- the french team feed off the positive energy from each other, and Benny's and Llodra's great performance should boost Tsonga, while Raonic will be disappointed and tired from today's match. While I'm rooting for France overall, I'll keep rooting for Popsicle, who is one of my favorite young players.

Re: Davis Cup 1R (France vs Canada) - WWW Rubber 4: Tsonga vs Raonic?

I'd rather Milos play a competitive match with Tsonga. It's great experience, he needs to learn how to play and beat the best in the world on a high pressure stage. Can't say I care much at all about what he does at San Jose, nor do I understand why anybody would.

Defending points at a 250 ATP event really shouldn't be high on his priority list considering his larger aspirations for this season and beyond.

Well, there's a bit of a crossroad here. Would you rather want Milos have success in a short-term manner by having him "fresh" to defend his upcoming points.....OR do you want him to have continued success by having a chance to boost his long-term confidence when he gets a crack at Tsonga?
