Kei's injuries tend to occur after playing Davis Cup. But he says he loves playing for Japan, so if he's decided to play I hope all the best to him and Team Japan!
But I pray the Japanese captain won't force him to play three rubbers...! Japan will have no chance against Bhupathi and Paes anyway.

This time the tie will be played at Ariake Colosseum, the venues for Japan Open. So it will also be a valuable match practice for Kei before the tournament.

Captain Takeuchi will make Kei play three rubbers again.
Don't know why he will use Sugita in singles, not Soeda or Ito, though Sugita is not a bad player.

R1 Y. SUGITA S. v. DEVVARMAN
R2 K. NISHIKORI v. R. BOPANNA
R3 K. NISHIKORI/G. SOEDA v. R. BOPANNA/V. VARDHAN
R4 K. NISHIKORI v. S. DEVVARMAN
R5 Y. SUGITA v. R. BOPANNA

I'm going on Sunday and will report on the matches later. :)

Great start from Japan, and it's a nice surprise win from Sugita not knowing his history against Somdev.
And to win it in straight sets!

I'm going on Sunday and will report on the matches later. :)
:yeah: Enjoy and hope you'll get some great matches.

Btw, bunny do you know of any live streams for the Japen vs India tie? I didn't see any from the usual livescorehunter.
Would be great to be able to watch both singles and doubles, I'm quite fascinated with the doubles rubber if Kei plays.

Sugita leads Devvarman 6-3 6-4. :)

He beat Devvarman in Japan Open qualifying in 2009 and put up a goot fight against Somdev at the Aptos challenger last year, losing in three sets. Maybe that's why the captain picked him to play the first rubber. Still, he must be playing really well and Somdev may have some problems.

Sugita def. Devvarman 6-3 6-4 7-5! :yippee:

Kei leads Bopanna 6-3. :)

Japan 2-0 India

Thanks bunny, I was checking livescorehunter while I read your post! (can watch it now...end of 1st set)
Yesterday I was at work, so couldn't see it anyway, but hopefully I can see Kei's singles rubber tomorrow :D

So are there any japanese pay TV that covers this tie live in Japan?
It's ashame the free to air don't promote it more to the public though.

Nope. Not even WOWOW that shows summaries of World Group matches when everyone has forgotten about it.
J-Sports used to cover DC matches but not anymore. It's a real shame! :(
Sadly, for many people in Japan tennis is something you do for fun, not a spectators' sports.
But tickets sell very well at Japan Open and Toray Panpacific, so I think many people will watch it if it's on TV. I guess it's just free-to-air TVs are being lazy they don't like to be involved in tennis broadcast because you'd never know when the match will end.

Btw, the guy wearing a white cap is Ito, and the guy with a black headband is Sugita. :)

(I'm sneaking watching it now at work. :p)

Hi guys, sorry for the lateness!
Was too tired to post anything yesterday and been very busy the past couple of days. Also the cable for connecting my digital camera with PC went missing until yesterday!

I went to see the final day of the DC playoff on Sunday.
It was a brutally hot day, at 33 degrees C! We do have scorching days in Septe
mber, but not as often and long as this year... (And turned out it was probably the last hot day this year because the temperature dropped from Monday and today we have a typhoon ravaging central Japan. :()
I got a reserved seat on the third row on courtside...very close from the cour
t. But it was on the sunny side (I usually buy seats in the shade but this tim
e I was too late to get one). I put on a lot of sun cream, but it was still to
o hot that it was almost painful. So after the first three games I moved up to
an unreserved seat in the shade.

I think the temperature on court must have been well over 40 degrees, 50 degrees even. Maybe because of that Kei started the match in a rather languish manner. His shots didn't have bites and he looked to be in "do-we-really-have-to-play-in-this-heat?" mode.
By contrast, Vishnu Vardhan, who is ranked #453 and stepped in to replace injured Devvarman, played very well from the start. He mostly plays futures and challengers in India and other Asian countries, so this was his first match on an international level (albeit still in Asia). He's 24 and I think he will move up the rankings quickly if he can play at that level more often. His biggest weapon is his serve and he's not afraid to come forward too.
The set was very close until 5-5, and Kei broke the opponent's game with a superb BH dtl winner.

From the second set, Kei started moving more agilely, and his winner count grew rapidly, while Vardhan's UEs started increasing...it became more and more like a match between a top 60 player and a top 500 player as it should be. Kei broke Vardhan's game with an Air Kei (I don't like to use the term very often but I think Kei went for it on that point. :)), and by the time the third set started, he sprinted to the position from his chair.
As expected he tightened up when he had first two MPs on Vardhan's serve and then at 40-0 when serving for the match. At 40-30, however, he won the match with an ace, then he raised his arms high.

After the match the team Japan went into a celebration mode. The four players in the team held a large Japanese flag and walked around the court. And then all the members, from the captain and coaches to players and ex-players, made a bow and then waved hands to all four sides of the crowd.

Soeda and Bopanna played the dead rubber later, but Bopanna called a trainer to receive treatment on his foot (I think), and he quit when leading 5-4* on serve.

One thing I noticed watching Kei's and Vardhan's match was a possible influence on them by the USO final between Djokovic and Rafa. It seemed to me they were chasing after evey ball, even the ones they probably wouldn't have tried to retrieve before. It made the match all the more exciting although I hope they won't injure themselves by trying to do the impossible if you know what I mean!

Anyway it's been a great three days of tennis for Japan. India had a tough luck with both Devvarman and Paes getting injured. Hope they will be back in the Wolrd Group too so that there will be atleast two countries from Asia in the elite group of tennis.

Will post pics when I get home. (I'm stuck at office because many train services are being suspended or overcrowded in Tokyo because of the damn typhoon that passed near here a few hours ago. :()

Thanks for the detailed report, bunny!
It is great win for Japan. But I hope Kei injury free.

I know the sun is so strong in Ariake. The sunburn is awful.
Take care!

@bunny, Thanks for sharing your Davis Cup experience!

It sounds like the heat was unbearable! I'd hate to play under those conditions but this is all part of the game...

I watch most of the match as well, the start surprised me because the games was close. Vardhan was going toe-to-toe in the 1st set, made it more interesting but also got me a bit worried :p
I can see it was sunny and the commentator did mention the extreme heat as well but you tend to forget when you're watching it online in comfort.

The last point + celebration was great to see, sad for the Indian team though.
I look forward to seeing some pics whenever you get around to it! thanks so much

Japan will host Croatia in February!
Kei vs Cilic again?

Draw for 2012 Davis Cup: World Group

BANGKOK, THAILAND: The Draw for the 2012 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group was made on 21 September at the Four Seasons hotel in Bangkok. The first round ties will be played on 10-12 February.

This year's finalists Spain and Argentina, the top two seeds for 2012, received contrasting fortunes in the Draw, while the pick of the ties sees 32-time champions USA travel to Switzerland.

Spain, fresh from booking their place in the final with a 4-1 win over France at the weekend, will be at home against Kazakhstan in a first meeting between the two nations. The Kazakhs made their World Group debut in 2011 and went on to reach the quarterfinals.

Argentina, who defeated defending champions Serbia 3-2 to reach the final, face a tricky away clash with Germany. The Argentines lead their series 5-2, although they were whitewashed 5-0 the last time the two nations met on German soil, in 1991.

Switzerland and USA will be doing battle for the fourth time when they go head-to-head, and home advantage has always proved pivotal in the past with the Americans holding a 2-1 advantage. The Swiss only gained promotion to the World Group on Monday when they finally sealed a 3-2 victory over Australia after bad light stopped play on Sunday.

Another intriguing match-up sees France travel to newly promoted Canada, while defending champions Serbia are at home against Sweden. The remaining ties see Austria welcome Russia, Czech Republic host Italy, and Japan face Croatia.
