Thanasi definitely won't be back for IW, as as I understand it, he's taken a protected ranking for Roland Garros, relying on him not being able to play for six months (back dates to his last tournament around October)

Groth will be included, should he want to be there. Tennis Australia has pushed him relentlessly with the public (Defense Force ads, Kia ads, Newcombe Medallists, every match televised) so they'll put him in the team. I have to say it's very strange seeing a player who's never even been TOP 50 get so much adulation

... okay.. let's include Groth over Peers because Peers made Wimbledon finals but didn't win! But Groth won his Bogota doubles final so he's obviously better for Davis Cup! ... you need help!

I'm not sure that is entirely fair, lots of other factors at work, not least Jamie. I do think it is problematic to pair him up with someone else who tends to wobble (like Groth) but with the right partner I think he might well deliver.

He certainly made a good start to the year at Brisbane...

Yes the real problem is Kokkinakis being out of play since he is not just a promising singles player but a very competent doubles player as well. Neither Tomic or Kyrgios are particularly good at doubles, though the latter the best of two evils.

Not sure I agree about Peers not playing well, didn't do well at AO, but when you have the crowd against you to the point of booing linesmen who call your opponents balls out, understandable. Let's see how he goes at Rotterdam - one good win up already.

Meanwhile Groth's cause becomes even weaker - he and Granollers went down in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) in the doubles to one of the possible US combos, Querrey-Johnston.

Past results should indicate he'll step it up for Davis Cup and I'd really like to see the Groth / Peers partnership be given a good chance. I think they're out best shot at Olympic success. Sam provides a back up option if Tomic or Kyrgios pull out of a singles tie too.
Sorry what past results indicate that Groth will step up for DC? He is 1-2 in doubles and 2-1 in singles, not exactly a stunning record.

On the plus side, US looking less like a strong nation on the doubles front at the moment given shocking first round loss by Bryans at Memphis. They do have a few other options mind you, but not the same as having the world no 1s against you.

Besides, Millman's case is looking stronger every day with each win; now 59 live.

Trouble is, what Hewitt is presumably ideally looking for is really a doubles partner for Peers and Millman probably doesn't have the doubles cred for that.

So two options other than Groth to consider.

1. Use Kyrgios for the doubles with Peers - Nick can be a bit erratic in doubles but in combo with a specialist might work. Millman would be a back up for the singles if Kyrgios becomes injured, or is too tired to play three ties (or the combo just doesn't work). But can Millman beat their number 2 if needed?

2. Go back to Guccione to team up with Peers against the Bryans or Bryan/Sock combo. Currently second highest ranked Oz player in doubles; in reasonable form; has a better DC doubles record than Groth (9-2).

Big risk to put two doubles specialists in, but fair chance US will take that risk too. Millman on standby in case Kyrgios (or Tomic) is injured in the last couple of days leading up...

Re: The Everything Davis Cup Thread (News, Articles, Live Scores)

I think a it's key in this tie that one of Tomic or Kyrgios beats Isner (and clearly grass is the best chance for them to do so). Off game-styles, I'd say Tomic is more likely to do so.

The doubles team is clearly in a mess especially with Groth's form and Lleyton's retirement. Has Millman done anything in doubles?

In the interests of Nick not getting injured and beating Querrey/Sock? and then getting a chance at Isner, I think he shouldn't play doubles.

I know Groth's not doing well right now but I would probably choose Tomic/Kyrgios/Peers/Groth. Shame for Millman, I think he'd have a better chance to be singles back up if not for facing an extremely good doubles nation.

Agree - if he leaves it will put serious questions marks on Tennis Australia's treatment of players, and their priorities in general. TA haven't really made an effort to help Bernie's image become more positive after the scandals of last year, which you would think would be in their best interests - it's a weird dynamic.

Anyway, I will definitley shed a tear if such a talented, humorous player such as Bernie leaves. That would be a bad thing for Aussie tennis, although the public would no doubt think otherwise.

That would really limit our future DC dream team as well.....
