Re: John Peers

Guess I did my sums wrong - down to 11 and more points dropping this week. Plus faces Murray-Soares in R1 at Barcelona...Gah.

I wasn't sold on the Peers/Kontinen partnership from the start and after a few months I agree with myself even more.

They are a solid pair who will do reasonably well but they are not a top 10 grand slam winning combo. Peers will drop out of the top 10 very soon and struggle to get back.

I think Peers can do better. Like Murray who bagged Bruno Soares are now they are number 1 and Aus Open champions. Unfortunately for Peers, all the top 10/20 are in steady combo's. Perhaps he can somehow get someone like Roger-Vasselin, Zimonjic, Klaasen or Nestor. Would be an improvement on Kontinen. As soon as some of the stronger combo's consider splitting, if I was Peers I would be jumping on them.
While I agree it would have been nice if Peers had managed to grab someone higher up the rankings pile, I'm not so pessimistic. Henri is no slouch - had 6 titles and 3 finals before he teamed up with Peers. It takes time for any partnership to jell, and there are signs this one is coming together.

At the moment my back of the envelope points projection has him on 7 for June (Olympics entry date). Of course, two more masters and RG to go before then so everything can change. But the fact that they beat two teams currently above them in the race at MC is surely encouraging.

The key question is whether both have the potential to improve both individually and as a team. Given both similar ages relatively young for doubles, I think the answer is probably yes, whereas teaming up with one of ageing (and declining) veterans (Nestor is 43, Zimonjic 39!) isn't a long-term strategy.

Re: John Peers

Alas the run ended, go down to Cabal-Farah (who are currently 6th in the race) 4-6, 4-6.

Still, good start to the clay season.

Re: John Peers

Peers had looked to be in severe danger of dropping out of top ten (and thus automatic entry qualification for Olympics with choice of partner), but making a great start to the clay season at Monte Carlo, hopefully the shape of things to come (worth noting that clay seems to be a relative strength for Kontinen).

Peers-Kontinen have now clocked up two very good wins, over Klassen-Ram and Rojer-Tecau. and - and loss by the Bryans means he has probably consolidated his rise back up to 7 (assuming I've done my sums right) when looked in severe danger of dropping out of top 10.

Hope they can maintain the momentum...

Re: John Peers

Nice to see Peers playing with Stosur in the mixed - can Australia field two mixed doubles teams in the Olympics?

Re: John Peers

Looks like a good start to the combo. 6-3 4-2 so far.

Can't say I'm watching with AO on though, so not sure how it looks.

Tough opener, lets hope they make it.
Should in theory be reasonably evenly matched. Cuevas and Bolelli haven't played together before (or if they have not over the last year) either, but Cuevas has a similar doubles ranking to Sam at his doubles peak (Cuevas currently at 34) while Bolelli ranks below Peers (currently 13).

And they are going to have to win at least at this level givne could be up against the Bryans in DC....

Re: John Peers

Excellent win for John Peers, defends the title he won with Jamie Murray last year, showing he can play and win titles with different partners.
Good match to watch, Duckworth had a great first set, returning off his face, but went off a bit in the second.
Gooch improved through-out but was too static and missed a few easy volleys in the first set.
John was solid through-out and was ably backed up by Kontinen who returned exceptionally well and hit a few clutch over heads. Needs to work on his lobs though.

Will be interesting to see how Peers goes alongside Sam

Was indeed a one-off. Dodig was initially on the list with a random and then must have caught up with Sam 'on-site'
