Re: J.P. Smith

JP grinds out a first round win over qualifier, peer Eric Quigley (ATP297), from the USA. with a close 76(6), 63 win.

Next up is 29 year-old Slovakian Grega Zemlja (ATP179), who is definitely beatable for JP.

Go JP Smith

Re: J.P. Smith

JP goes down to 21 year-old American Mitchell Krueger in a tight two set match 57 67(3), in Champaign. A pity for him as he strived to get positioned for the Oz Open, and the top 100.
Is that JP's last tournament for this year?

Solid 6-4 6-4 win over up and coming Fritz in the first round of the Knoxville Challenger.

Surely he still has done enough to put himself firmly at the top of TA's thinking for a discretionary wildcard into the AO, anyway. Given the rather heartbreaking nature of his efforts in the wildcard playoff and qualies of late, I'd say he is deserving of a chance.
I can see why he took the chance - trying something different to see if it worked out. And worst case scenario, get to see some visit places, interact with a lightly different crowd!

There are still a couple more late challengers whose entry lists haven't come out yet so still some possibilities, though in retrospect doing Traralgon and Canberra might have been better options.

I agree he should be a good chance for a wc though - much prefer it to go to him than Ebden for example.

If he only plays Knoxville, I don't think he can finish the year in the top 100 which is a shame.

Dissapointing end to the year for JP. He really was a big chance to push for a top 100 spot. I might have missed him in an entry list but I think he has played his last tournament for 2015.

Re: J.P. Smith

As with Millman, JP has his chances, but ultimately goes down in 4.

The positive news is that the 35 qualifying points have lifted him to a live ranking of 107, just 20 or so points from the Top 100. Given that JP is defending almost nothing until early November, it is likely that his upcoming Challenger run will get him there.

Not sure JP will be as bad as he was in that first set again this year

It's JP's forum -
In current form you'd have to think Jipper would be a solid chance at winning the tournament.

Re: J.P. Smith

Youzhny loves playing at the U.S Open. But I think JP could cause an upset here.
