I think that's what he and his team are aiming at since they teamed up with Gilbert.
Kei's tennis----aggressive from the baseline and hitting a lot of winners---is attractive but he tended to make too many UEs. And since the elbow injury, I have a feeling he hasn't been able to hit FH as hard as before although his BH is becoming considerably better. I think as you said he's trying to find the balance between offence and defence, and that will change depending on who he's playing against.

Re: 2011 ATP World Tour 1000 (for March): second stop, Miami - Sony Ericsson Open

Kei wrote in his blog that he tried to play more aggressively than usual because otherwise he wouldn't stand a chance against Rafa. Although he regrets not being able to convert BPs and allowed Rafa to break him due to his own errors, he's basically happy with the way he played, it reminded him of what his tennis really is. He says it's too risky to play that aggressively all the time, but it's a great feeling to hit winners by playing attacking tennis. He things his play made it difficult for Rafa, and that he went a step closer to a breakthrough against the Spaniard.

Q. How tough was that match in the end?
RAFAEL NADAL: Was a difficult one for sure, yeah. Nishikori is a very, very good player. Is one of these first rounds that you don't want to see, I think. I'm very happy about how I played today. I think I played at high level tonight. The feeling was better than last week, so that's important thing. The serve worked very well at the end of the match. In general, I think was a really complete match, because Nishikori for a moment was really good and was difficult.

Q. You mentioned that you felt that you served better today. What did you have to work on to improve it? Because last week particularly in the final it was very much trouble for you.
RAFAEL NADAL: Nothing. I tried to (indiscernible) about how I serve when I serve well. I tried to slow down a little bit the speed, but at the same time serve with higher percentage.
I think that worked well, no? Because I served 117 to 124, 25 miles almost every time. That's enough speed if you put the right percentage inside and if you put the balls close to the lines.
Nishikori I think is a good returner. He return very fast. He's fast and long and he's difficult. Only thing a little bit that I have to improve a little bit was the second serve, because the speed of the second serve was for moments 85, 88, 89, 90, 92, but I had to try to serve a little bit faster the second serve. But in general, seriously, I am very happy about the match of tonight.

It was a very decent performance from both players, Nadal played some remarkable points to save bps.

Tough for Kei to draw Nadal so early, I think he could've beaten a lot of the other players playing like he did tonight and go much further. But anytime you get to play the best players are valuable lessons.

Good job Kei, keep going!

4-6 4-6
O well, I think he put up a better fight against Rafito than in Wimbledon last year, but not up to their first match at Queen's three years ago, but then Rafa didn't know what to expect from him.

Better luck in the clay season! I think Kei has a very good chance to go far in Houston.

Yeah Kei had more bps, but zero conversion rate so far...still a close contest.
Hope Kei can give it more.

Saved 2 BPs but couldn't save the 3rd.
4-6 0-1*...

Break back, now!

Re: 2011 ATP World Tour 1000 (for March): second stop, Miami - Sony Ericsson Open

1st set to Rafa 6-4.
It was a very close affair in the first four games. Kei was the one who had the first BP of the set but Rafa held on.
I think Kei is playing very well so far and has made Rafa very serioius into the match. C'MON KEI!!!

1st serve: Kei 47%, Rafa 64%

winners/UEs: Kei 9/17, Rafa 9/8

BP conversion: Kei 0/4, Rafa 1/2

Net points won: Kei 4/4, Rafa 4/6

But now 0-40...

Kei and Don lost their doubles to Melzer and Petzschner, 6-2 6-3.
But that was to be expected. Kei, now focus on your third challenge vs Rafa!
It will be their first match on hard court. (Funny enough both of their past matches took place on grass!)

A great win over his former boogeyman, and surprise surprise, his first victory at a Masters series event.

Kei is playing doubles with Donald Young too.
But I don't think they'll last long---they'll meet 4th seed Melzer/Petzschner in R1.
