It's called getting old (in tennis years).

The hard reality is that despite the longevity of some of the current top ten, the people who go on forever like Hewitt and Federer are the extreme exceptions not the norm (and of course Hewitt declined sharply from the mid 2000s as we all know) - most players start declining at around 26-27, and that is more likely to happen faster for journeymen compared to top players.

There are for example currently 238 players with ranking points born in 1995 (Nick Kyrgios' group).

There are 81 born in 1987 (Ebden and Groth year).

There are only 52 born in 1985 (Matosevic's year).

That doesn't explain Duckworth of course!

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

and James Duckworth is heading southwards with a rocket this year as well. He seems incapable of staying fresh and healthy for any length of time. Hopefully Sam cuts out all the Newcombe medal, Kia ad hype and gets some results on the board.

Thank goodness - such a relief to see Sam win a match after his rotten run, especially at Masters level.

Good to see Grothy win, hopefully this snowballs into something. I definitely have faith in him to beat Thiem. Go grothy!

Re: Samuel Groth: The Forgotten Australian

First serve% and net points won need improvement, as they have all year.

96% won on first serve suggests first serve in% could be important against Thiem

25 precious points as Sam finally wins at M1000! 6-3 6-2 over Estrella Burgos. Sam returned really well. Hopefully this signals a change in fortune.

Next up Thiem. Though a long shot (on Thiem's good surface) Sam's chances are higher than one might think... Thiem struggles to best the likes of Kovalik, Pella and many low ranked players, even in the form of his life. I think how Sam plays on return will be important again

Ooooh big Sam... another first round loss, in Delray Beach, oh so close this time, losing in the 3rd set tie-break to USA wildcard, the up-and-coming Noah Rubin (ATP245), 46 64 67(6).
A lost opportunity there, but this current crop of USA youngsters are hot.
