After the success of the Roland Garros thread, let's get this going for Wimbledon. The draw is merely days away, and the warm up tournaments are in full flow. (draw will be posted in the OP as soon as it comes out)

Some of us are probably still not recovered from one of the most exciting slams we've had in a while. A semi final that saw a similar amount of drama, quality and tension that made the Wimbledon final of 2008 the greatest match of all time. With the same winner.

With the glorious sight of clay court tennis still fresh in our minds, it's time for a whole different cup of tea. Grass court tennis. Purists will love the sight of fast paced, aggressive tennis. Cynics will have something to moan about the surface speed, but the fact remains, it's still so very different from hardcourts and clay courts.

Starring:

Roger Federer

The 7-time Wimbledon champion is still hungry for more. Got rid of the nasty aftertaste of yet another disappointing defeat at Roland Garros by finally claiming his first title of the year on the grass of Halle. Some say he's well and truly finished this time, but the same was being said last time around when he took home another Wimbledon trophy by silencing 2011 champion Novak Djokovic and crowd favourite Andy Murray. The defending champion will have his work cut out, but the roof surely is a big advantage for an established indoor player like himself. A few drops of rain at the right time could be just what he needs to clinch a record breaking 18th slam and 8th Wimbledon. Can he do what Rafa managed to do at Roland Garros?

Andy Murray

Could this finally be his time? He's getting ever closer. After a heartbreaking loss in the final last year to Roger Federer, he has bounced back by bulldozing that same Roger Federer in the Olympic final on the grass of Wimbledon. Last week saw him win another Queens title by beating Marin Cilic in the final. Skipped Roland Garros so he could be in tip-top shape for the big one. Arguably the favourite with his impressive grass court results of late. What we know for sure, is that he'll have the crowd's full support. Can it lift him to greatness and the Wimbledon title?

Novak Djokovic

Played some of the finest grass court tennis of his career in 2011 to become Wimbledon champion. Afterwards has looked shaky on his least favourite surface and questions are being raised if his 2011 run was a one-off occasion. Lost to Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro at the Olympics, and Federer had defeated him a while earlier at Wimbledon. The bookies have made him the hot favourite despite the doubts. Is probably still having nightmares about some crucial points that cost him against Nadal at the French Open. Can he redeem himself and win his seventh slam?

Rafael Nadal

Well, well, well, what can be said about Rafa Nadal? Seven tournament wins out of nine finals, first man to win the same slam eight times and easily the leader in the ATP race. The two-time former champion is the big question mark at Wimbledon this year. Although the nine finals are very impressive, eight of those have come on clay. And despite him winning his only tournament off-clay on the hardcourts of Indian Wells, how he'll perform and how his knees hold up away from the red dirt is something that we will have to find out. Suffered a shocking round 2 exit against Lukas Rosol in 2012, which showed again that he is vulnerable to big hitters early on in the tournament. Even at Roland Garros he had trouble. Once he gets past the first week though, be afraid, because he has been there before, knows what it takes and when he sees the finish line, he is not one to slow down.

Dark Horses

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. A notoriously great grass court player who can catch fire at any time. Still lacks the consistency to be named among the big favourites, but look out if he has an on-day.

Tomas Berdych. Former Wimbledon finalist, with several big wins on the grass. Crashed out in R1 to Ernest Gulbis last year and won't want to let this happen again.

Tommy Haas. 35 years old, or young more like it. Rolling back the years and a fine grass courter looking for one last dreamrun.

Juan Martin Del Potro. Olympic bronze medalist. Grass isn't his favourite surface, but he can certainly play on it.

Jerzy Janowicz. Had a nice run here last time and can do serious damage with his big serve and heavy groundstrokes. Whether he can keep it up for long enough is a big if.

Ernests Gulbis. Huge hitter. Probably the most dangerous unseeded player out there. Failed against a rejuvinated Monfils at the French, won't be in danger of meeting him again.

Grigor Dimitrov. After several disappointing losses recently, this can be just what he needs. Has all the tools to excel on grass, just needs that big breakthrough.

Xavier Malisse. Won't win it, but he is one of the better grass court players around and can have a good run with the right draw. All or nothing most likely, book a R1 exit or a R4/QF run.

Lukas Rosol. Probably won't back up his fairytale moment from last year, but all eyes will be on him regardless, especially if he gets a marquee player or dare we dream, a rematch with Rafael Nadal?

Hewitt not among dark horses, shocking omission

#5 ·
This should finally become THAT slam when Hewitt has a favourable draw.

#4 ·
Looking forward to my favourite Slam of the year.

#10 ·
we all know how the draw will be. Easy for Murray and he still won't win

He's at least right that Rosol's place in the draw will be looked for. Janowicz? Perhaps not so much. Losing to Basic, who lost to Zverev, who lost 0-6, 0-6 to Federer was not an indication of grass greatness to come imo.

Youzhny is a much better grass player, but noone will seriously believe he can take down a top-4 so his place in the draw won't be very anticipated.

Mallise ?
Is Pashanski a dark horse now?...he also won today

that's pure poetry.

by the way I agree this thread is way premature, there'll pages of usless tardism from every wing.

In the Clay Death era we had a fireside chat discussion thread for Wimbledon the minute the US Open was over.

This thread isn't premature, we're already in grass court season and the qualies are in full flow. Everyone is just looking at their calendar to see when these godawful grass court vulture warmups are over (not meaning Halle and Queens of course, the other ones) and we can get on with the real deal.

#27 ·
Clay Death era was MTF's peak, we are not gonna reach those highs any more.

#24 ·
considering Florian Mayer then proceeded to school Gasquet and Janowicz has already accomplished this mission Jerzy Shore could have reached QF on his second appearance at Wimby

#28 ·
I pray for Nadal to lose as earlier as possible just to see his tards in agony.

#29 ·
What about Sijsling, i think he can go very far, he has great game especially on grass or fast surfaces, he plays a quite good year, but IMO, only few people realise him, it's in his hands to do some damage, let's say, R4 with a good draw could be possible, good serve, good volleys, good forehand, he's an excellent player, did really well against Tsonga, and other Top 20 player in the last months, so why shouldn't he be able to have some nice matches in Wimby, and beat one or even more of the Top 32 seeded.
Mark my words, he could be kind of a secret favorite together with players like Malisse, Hewitt , Youzhny or Kohlschreiber.

#31 ·
didn't he just pulled out of hertogenbosch?

#36 ·
Something tells me this will be a good event.Evil duopoli & hooligan will lose early.Tsonga or Djoko King will win.

#37 ·
Youzhny could take out some guys in the top 20 and make another QF run. Same with Haas.

#39 ·
Haas has played so many matches this year and he is 35 years old. I am not sure if he has a deep run in a Slam left in him.

#47 ·
What about Tipsarevic? He's had surprising runs before at Wimbly.
He also trashed Dimitrov today

I'd really love to know how GSMnadal is thinking. He writes a review for RG, where he includes detailed info about 5 players: The top 4 + David Ferrer. So far so good.
Then Ferrer goes on to reach the final, and two weeks later not only is he out of the 'main contenders', but not even a dark horse?

Brilliant

#50 ·
It's Wimbledon, not RG.

#63 ·
I'd love to give you a detailed reply sooner, but Fat Camel basically answered it. This is Wimbledon, not RG. Notice how Nadal has dropped from first to fourth place among the main contenders? How would you explain that after he won RG? And why I bumped up Federer to #1 despite him embarrassing himself against Tsonga on clay?

It's grass, it's a whole different beast to clay. I look at previous results, current form, grass credentials and a little bit what I think is going to happen or who I see as the favourites.

Ferrer probably reaches R4/QF, maybe even SF with the right draw, but will do so without beating anyone noteworthy. He's NOT a dark horse for the title and NOT a dark horse for a potential shocking upset.

#51 ·
Good preview :yeah:

IMO, you should add Tsonga in the detailed info section though - two SFs in a row surely make him clearly the fifth man to look out for here. Also maybe Cilic in the dark horses, he's not any less likely to make an upset than some of the names there imo.
