I managed to get a quick interview with Sam this week. He talked about what it's like to be a big guy playing on grass and a few other things:

Hope you find it interesting!

Querrey Loses Despite Rare Strong Showing on Clay

Sam Querrey, the highest-ranked American man at No. 20 and the 18th seed at the French Open, fell in the third round Friday in five fleet sets to local favorite Gilles Simon of France, 2-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Though it was a five-set match on clay, the pace of play was quick; Simon claimed victory in just 2 hours 53 minutes.

Though he lost, Querrey played some of the most impressive clay court tennis of his career, and actually won one more total point than Simon.

“I think he plays unbelievably well,” Simon said in his French press conference. “He plays really well. He played even better than me. For two sets and a half, he was really leading.”

Querrey, who has often previously succumbed to patches of hangdog mopeyness, kept his energy level high throughout the match, and never looked at all disengaged even when the match was trending away from him.

“”He played better than me,” Simon reiterated. “He was serving hard. He hit well on the forehand. He never missed a backhand.”

Simon admitted frustration at Querrey’s clean play, especially early in the match. In the first set, Querrey hit 14 winners to just two by Simon.

“At some stage, when the guy’s playing really well, he’s hitting really hard and he’s playing well, very close to the lines, I think this is not going to last for very long,” said Simon. “I can’t just admire him and say, This is great. I think, no, sometimes he’s going to miss. And then I start saying stupid things. And I say to them, ‘hey, you can miss a ball now and again.’”

But after Querrey went up a break for 2-0 to start the fourth set, the opportunistic Simon gained a foothold, and immediately gained the break back. in the fourth set when his opponent’s level briefly dipped, Querrey went up a break for 2-0 but then quickly gave a break back.

“It was simply above my normal level of play,” Simon said of the match. I had a second good moment when again I gave it all, and he gave me no other option, anyway. So I’m very happy that I won this match. For me it’s a big victory.”

Querrey’s loss leaves John Isner as the final American man remaining in the tournament. Isner reached the third round Friday with a dramatic five-set match of his own, coming back to beat fellow American Ryan Harrison 5-7, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-1, 8-6. If Isner wins his third-round match over Tommy Haas, he will re-enter the Top 20 and regain the mantle of the top American.
