This team is a mess. Courier has zero fire. He is doing no coaching. Should be fired. Querry and Isner are mentally challenged. They wilted. US tennis is the bottom of the barrel.
I started to laugh when Querrey missed easy forehand at 5:4 (deuce) in the 4th set after blowing MP and Courier started to nod like he wanted to say "That's right Sam, everything is under control, don't worry" Sam immediately netted easier overhead than previous FH.
Too many US tennis fans still think they should have players on Agassi and Sampras' level. They don't even have players on Roddick and Blake level atm. Need to be realistic.
If Fish was fully fit he'd be better than Querrey though IMO.

I doubt it's that; rather, many US fans seem insecure after the absence of Sampras, etc. These fans act as though American players are a direct representation of them. They seem overly concerned with how the country's tennis is presented to the rest of the world, especially in the absence of highly successful champions.
That's why when guys like Tipsy, Tsonga, Almagro, and co. clown out, discussion rarely transcends the player in question. Whenever an American player goofs up, it's treated as some greater implication toward the country's tennis as a whole. It's often an American or few ushering the most criticism.
If anything Courier has overachieved by getting Isner to beat Federer on clay in Davis Cup. Isner can lose to just about anyone if he's not getting enough done with his serve, especially when he seems to be in a confidence slump like he has lately. Also, he skipped the AO at the last minute with an injury so he may not have had much preparation.
I think Courier does a decent job and unlike you actually do believe he is very interested and exciting to take part in coaching Davis Cup. do understand, not all coaches are there just to yell or give advice verbally. some coaches do a great job of reinstilling confidence in a player through non verbal motions, nods, facial expressions. sometimes just having an experienced and well known mind and individual in the audience being your # 1 supporter watching you can make a big difference.
Courier works a lot with American players throughout the entire season and does more than you know as far as planning with the American team. just because he's not whispering ideas into the players ears every second means nothing.
there is no way you could cut the pie of having a 4 time Grand Slam winner as a David Cup coach as a bad thing. trust me, most people that accomplished are not interested / would find it boring and not worth their time to bother helping with Davis Cup.
American Davis Cup is fortunate to have Courier, and the truth is that we are in a lull of particularly good players right now so he is the last thing to worry about. Querrey struggling against Alvarez is the problem. dude is a headcase
Roddick retired, Fish heart problems, Harrison head case, Bryans getting old, Querrey headcase, Isner injured,Young flipflop, Blake done, Sock and Kudla journeyman, Johnson headcase/no good physical.
