Toni just gave an interview on Spanish radio. Said:
- Rafa's career is not in any danger. They are just being cautious.
- Rafa would like to play in Rio 2016 and hopes to compete there (again I suppose emphasising this is not some career ending injury). They all want to extend his career as much as possible and to do that they are taking the conservative approach -- "no more patches". (By this I think he is referring to earlier remarks he made about how this year they've just tried to manage injury in a piece meal way by taking time off in Miami etc. but that is not correct. He needs to wait till he is 100%.)
- It is not the same tendinitis as before, but is related to the same issue.
- Toni's been hearing that Nadal's career will be short all his life - but even if he retired now it would not have been a short career as he's played for a decade as a professional - since he was 16.
They also had some doctor on who said Nadal's tendon had degenerated and needed 3 months of rest. Given that he had most of June off, July and now August, maybe a DC return in September is not too far fetched...
Basically, as always, I think the "his career is over" brigade are going a bit far. If anything this sounds like he's learned from past mistakes and is following exactly what the doctors tell him to try and get the most from what remains of his career. Beating any of the other 3 - Andy, Roger, Nole - would have been tough at the US Open - let alone when not at full match fitness and without competitive play. If he was still suffering a bit, then better to be cautious - at this stage he needs to basically try and maximise slam chances.
As a reminder - think of the Nadal we saw at WTF 2011 - listless, passionless, bagelled by Federer. Next major tournament a few months later - few games away from winning the Australian Open. His body will always be an issue but the fire and motivation to me has been a bigger concern - at least that seems to still be there and perhaps be even stronger due to setbacks. Sounds like Rio 2016 might just be the think that keeps him going even if it seems farfetched right now that he'd be competitive in 4 years time.

Nadal back practicing on clay today. Toni gave an interview saying they'll slowly increase intensity - may play before Acapulco depending on Nadal and also doctor's advice. (Sao Paolo being touted as an option as well as European indoor events - don't see any possibility of that myself though - think it'll be clay). Toni said Nadal's practices this last month have been good - Toni expects him to reach his best level again this year. Bodes well for RG hopefully...

Canceled a tournament two weeks before the start but already training. Rafito even left his credibility gaining habits. Desperate times, demand desperate measures

I just have one interesting thing to tell you. My brother was having problem with his knee & running and was seeing physiotherapist specialist for this kind of problems in Belgrade . And she told him that she was in some seminar of physiotherapist held in Seoul, South Korea and that she spoke with Nadal physio and that she asked him what will happen with him for 10 years . Nadal's physio told her that his knees are in bad condition, but they request from him to make him fit to play no matter what is the price.

I'm not sure if someone posted this here before, but it wasn't the stomach virus directly that led to Rafa's withdrawal from the AO. What he said was that the virus caused him to lose valuable training time, so that he couldn't reach the level of physical fitness needed to meet the demands of a grand slam.

I'm sure that we are all familiar with stomach viruses. I suffered one of the most debilitating stomach viruses ever imaginable last year and in 12 hours, I felt fine. My condition was so bad that I literally could not stand up for more than 3 or 4 seconds. The pain in my abdomen and lower back was absolutely unbearable and I almost had to go to the emergency room. But suddenly, I had to vomit....and then I felt 80% better, and my condition improved dramatically over the next few hours. Then I experienced a much milder case last month.
These things don't last long. But for him to suggest that he has been crippled to the point of being ill-prepared 2-weeks ahead of time is ludicrous....especially since we see him already on court (a clay one). At most, he may have missed 2 or 3 days of training...and that's not even enough of a disruption to cause him to pull out 2 weeks in advance. There isn't enough training in the world that would substitute for an actual tour-level match (after his 6 month layoff) so this virus certainly didn't stifle any notable success.
Of course, I'm just speculating. I simply believe that it's just an excuse in order to delay his return and make it on clay, rather than a hard court.

^Your virus one was an individual case, Nadal's virus could've been worse and longer.
Besides, how energetic did you feel in the week following your bug? You may have not felt queasy but it usually takes a number of days, or even weeks, to reach full strength again.
Re: Rafael Nadal Injury/Health Update Thread : Nadal out of Abu Dhabi exho
Nadal is fading fast. If he doesn't step it up in the clay season and win the FO he will be close to done. And I am talking in terms of slams here. Can't see him winning a slam again if he doesn't win the FO this year. Djokovic will be a huge threat there.
Re: Rafael Nadal Injury/Health Update Thread : Nadal out of Abu Dhabi exho
Never in doubt that Nadal wasn't sick. Only the blindest of Nadulltards would buy such a weak excuse. The guy simple didn't want to get thrashed by some mug like Cilic. He won't return until the clay so he can avoid looking like an amateur player.
Re: Rafael Nadal Injury/Health Update Thread : Nadal out of Abu Dhabi exho
I think he'll likely return to the tour during the February 'South American clay court swing'.
Since he's already committed to Acapulco (which doesn't start until the end of February) I think he'll probably start back at the 250 clay court tournament in Sao Paolo in mid February (ideal as it's a small clay court tournament with a relatively weak field).
Playing those two clay court tournaments would then prepare him for Indian Wells and Miami in March.

Will be interesting to see once AO starts if any of his sycophants in the media have something to say about this. Even his biggest tards have to admit it looks pretty bad when he's out there practicing two weeks before a tournament he pulled out of. I mean how often do you see players out on the practice court right after they pulled out of a tournament?

He actually does not have the luxury. Unlike Fed, he has not met that criteria yet to have quite that freedom. The longer he's out and the lower his ranking falls the worse it will get for him.

Nadal is preparing well and is super motivated, he's also training with non-gravity machines that will help him heal his knees. I think he will give a surprise to all his haters in 2013 who desperately want him to fail.

It's a long subject to explain here, but basically they're NASA type training machines that let you use them in a free-gravity environment. Nadal is training now with them. There are many articles on it:

Nadal is finally being clever with his routine.
Brasil Open
Acapulco
Indian Wells
Monte Carlo
Madrid
Rome
Is how he should always start his year. If he has to play Miami then tank it!
