From To Kill A Mockingbird, a classic novel by Harper Lee:

pg. 103: Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

Miss Maudie clarified a statement that Atticus had uttered to Scout earlier. The "mockingbirds" that Miss Maudie was referring to were the people who did not do harm to anyone. They lived their lives in peace and quiet.
