Sharapova opts for Groeneveld

Maria Sharapova has revealed she will work with Dutchman, Sven Groeneveld, as her new head coach ahead of the new season. The world number four has been without a full-time trainer since her split from long-time coach Thomas Hogstedt following her second round exit at Wimbledon, briefly working with Jimmy Connors before parting ways with the American.

After a disappointing second half of the season, Sharapova has been working with Groeneveld in recent weeks and has been left feeling positive about the link-up going into 2014. The Dutchman boasts a wealth of experience having worked with the likes of Monica Seles, Mary Pierce, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki.

"I'm happy to announce my official partnership with Sven Groeneveld. We've been working together since I got back on the court and after seeing him on the opposing side for so many years, I'm excited to have him become a part of my team. I’m looking forward to the year ahead."

Groeneveld is currently overseeing Sharapova's rehabilitation as she returns to action from the shoulder injury which has sidelined her since August, keeping the Russian out of the US Open and the end-of-season run-in. The injury may have come at time when Sharapova was playing some promising tennis but it has allowed her to sort out her coaching situation ahead of next season.

The world No 4 is scheduled to make her return to competitive action in time for January’s Australian Open by playing at the Brisbane International at the end of the year. Barring any injury setback, Sharapova will be right up there in the tennis betting on the bet365 website when the year’s first grand slam begins in Melbourne in January.

The 2008 Australian Open champion will be desperate to prove she is ready to challenge the top players this season and give those who bet on tennis something to think about when it comes to the big tournaments next season.
