Tsonga Faces Race Against Time To Reach London

World number eight, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, is still aiming for a spot at the ATP World Tour Finals in November in London, despite missing large parts of this season through injury.

The Frenchman has to miss the US Open with the same knee problem that saw him withdraw from his second round encounter with Ernests Gulbis at Wimbledon back in June.

Tsonga faces strong competition for one of the final spots including from Milos Raonic who claimed his fifth title of his career by securing the Thailand Open, beating Tomas Beydych, a popular pick with betting fans, in the final in Bangkok on Sunday.

Raonic completed the job in straight sets against the number one seed in Thailand. He needed a tie breaker to win the opening set 7-6(7-4) after both players were serving well.

The second set was sealed much sooner though, as the 22-year old wrapped it up 6-3 to clinch the trophy and his second success of the year after a win back in February in San Jose.

The world number 11 hit 18 aces and won 95% of his first serve points in an impressive performance in the final. It took him just 77 minutes to wrap up the match. After edging the first set, the Canadian player of the year took control and only once had to see off a break point.

Tsonga, a perennial outside favourite in the sports betting, is only 180 points ahead of Raonic now as the players sit 10th and 11th respectively.

There are still two ATP 1000 masters events left on the calendar before London. The players head to China on October 6 for the Shanghai Masters. Then, later that month, they compete in the Paris Masters, as they seek the crucial points ahead of the tour finals.

Both Tsonga and Raonic have chosen to play in Tokyo this week in the Japan Open, which is worth 500 points.
