Nadal upbest despite setback

Rafael Nadal reflected on a positive week despite his shock defeat in the final of the Chile Open.

The Spaniard made his long-awaited comeback from a serious knee injury in South America last week and proved a big hit with the locals on his way to the final. He fell just short of a morale-boosting title success, however, losing to Horacio Zeballos in three sets.

It was Nadal's first tournament appearance since Wimbledon last June, in which time he has missed a number of high-profile events, including the Olympics and the US Open.

The 11-time Grand Slam champion was pleased to be back out on court, but admitted he has a long way to go before returning to full fitness.

"A week ago we didn't know how the body would respond. [Now] at least I know we can compete at a certain level. I think that was a positive week," said Nadal to tennis betting news reporters.

"The knee is still bothering me, but you have to face adversity with the best possible face and look forward to keep working and enjoy what I like the most, to play tennis."

The former world number one dropped to number five in the world rankings during his lay-off, a position he will be determined to improve in the coming months.

For now, though, Nadal is simply happy to be back doing the thing he loves the most. He was humbled by the support he received in Chile.

"The tennis is important, but for me the best thing was to have the feelings I've had this week, with a full stadium and one of the best crowds I've ever had in my life. It's a place I won't forget because of the love people gave me," added Nadal.
