Murray to build on strong start

Andy Murray really came out of the traps firing with a straight sets win over Robin Haase in the opening round of the Australian Open and it’s certainly a result the British number one can build on.

The Scot had been training in Miami before the start of the first Grand Slam of the year and also showed great touch to win the Brisbane International before making the trip down to Melbourne. Betfair 2013 Australian Open markets reacted to his fine preparation for the tournament by making him one of the favourites.

Murray had said before his encounter with Haase that he was more determined than ever to claim a Grand Slam title and the 25-year-old really backed up his words with a strong display, winning 6-3 6-1 6-3 against the Dutchman.

The performance is a very positive start for the current US Open champion and will set him up nicely for his second round encounter against the Portuguese Joao Sousa.

Murray was pleased with his showing against Haase on Tuesday and hopes he can keep getting better as the rounds progress.

He said: “I started the year well in Brisbane but coming into the slams the first match is normally pretty tough.

"You just have to focus and play solid, not make too many silly mistakes. I did a good job of that today.
"It is always nice to get through the first round of any tournament but especially here."

Murray’s next opponent Sousa managed to see off the challenge of Argentine wildcard John-Patrick Smith to book his place in the second round.

The match with the world number 100 should be an easier encounter than Haase but nonetheless Andy Murray will be wanting to continue laying down markers for his main rivals, as he looks to go all the way in Melbourne this year.
