Djokovic pleased with year's work

World number two Novak Djokovic insists he has enjoyed "an incredible year" despite ending 2012 with only one Grand Slam title.

The Serbian was the stand-out player in 2011 – winning 10 tournaments, including Grand Slam tournament victories at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Djokovic also captured a record-breaking five ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles.

The 25-year-old picked up where he left off at the start of this year, reclaiming his Australian Open title in Melbourne as he continued to dominate.

However, Djokovic has struggled to build on January's triumph, by his own incredible standards. But he insisted any drop in results and scores were down to the performances of rivals Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.

"Comparing to 2011, results-wise maybe wasn't at the top, because I had three Grand Slam titles. This year I have only one. But I've had an incredible
year," said Djokovic.

"We have to pay a little bit of respect to the other players. They've had an amazing year also. At this level you cannot expect to win all the matches."

Djokovic was speaking after his victory over Murray in the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday. Punters betting on sports had backed Murray to repeat his US Open triumph over the Serb, who saved was forced five match points on his way to a dramatic victory, closing in on Federer at the top of the rankings.

Djokovic lost his number one spot to Federer after the Swiss won his 17th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. He is keen to reclaim that standing before the end of 2012.

"It's my biggest objective in this moment. It's something I'm aiming for," added Djokovic.
"Obviously this (Shanghai win) is going to be a huge confidence boost and also is going to help me in the race for number one."
