Federer Wary of Murray Threat

Posted 10-09-2012 at 10:49 AM by

World number one, Roger Federer, has pinpointed Andy Murray as a major threat to his position at the top of the world rankings.

Since lifting his maiden major title at the US Open in September, Murray has spoken of his desire to add more Grand Slams to his trophy cabinet and has targeted a more consistent 2013, with the hope of leapfrogging the Swiss at the summit.

Federer feels the Scot can hit his targets, admitting to the sport news that he will have a keen eye on his progress. "Yes, he can do it (reach number one)," said the 17-time Grand Slam. "He should be able to have that goal. He has results that back up his chances.

"His next nine months are going to be extremely interesting to follow. I hope for him he can achieve it eventually."

Murray will defend his Shanghai Masters title in China this week, fresh from his semi-final exit at the Japan Open. The Tokyo tournament was Murray's first appearance since his triumph at Flushing Meadows.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a successful 2012. Murray competed in his first Wimbledon final and won Olympic gold at the London Games before lifting the US Open. He also reached the Australian Open last four and the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Federer was full of praise for the way Murray bounced back from his Wimbledon heartache in July. "I think he's done so well. His reaction was amazing after not winning Wimbledon against me," Federer added.

"Then coming back to win the Olympics and bringing the victory home for his first Grand Slam at the US Open was great to see."

Murray will be out to make amends at SW19 next year, with a first Wimbledon title high on his list of priorities.
