No Return for Nadal Yet

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal has revealed that he may still be some time away from a return to competitive action, much to the disappointment of his fans from within the Betfair tennis community.

The 11-time major winner is currently sitting out the US Open, having already missed the chance to defend his Olympic title in London due to a knee injury, and he is desperate to get back into action soon.

"I really want to be back competing and enjoying the tennis tour, but I have many years in front of me and my knee needs some rest," he said.

Nadal, 26, last appeared at Wimbledon two months ago, when he was dumped out of the tournament by Czech outsider Lukas Rosol, and has been following doctors orders ever since.

“I feel better after the meeting with my doctors and happy knowing that the evolution of the past weeks has been positive and surgery has been avoided.

“I will continue to work with the plan my doctors have established to be able to compete as soon as possible in the right conditions.

"I will be back when I have no pain and am able to compete with guarantee," he added.

Spain face the USA in their Davis Cup semi-final between 14th-16th September and it looks certain that Nadal will miss that tie, although he will be hopeful of returning for the final if Spain progress.

Beyond the Davis cup semi-final, the next big engagement on the horizon for Nadal is the ATP tour finals, due to start at the O2 Arena in London on 5th November.

Nadal reached the final of the tournament in 2010 but was defeated by Roger Federer. Given his lack of form, fitness and practice a similar result this year would be an exceptional achievement for the Spaniard.
