Murray digs deep to reach last four

Third seed Andy Murray displayed all of his fighting qualities as he overcame a significant deficit to see off Croatia's Marin Cilic and reach the US Open semi-finals.

Number 12 seed Cilic stormed into a 6-3 5-1 lead at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday and looked set to extend Murray's long wait for a first-ever Grand Slam title, with sports betting markets all but paying out on a Cilic victory.

However, Murray clawed his way back into the contest before racing to a 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-0 victory. He will face Tomas Berdych in the last four on Saturday.

"I've had a lot of tough matches - everyone goes through them," Murray told the gathering of news sport reporters, "We've seen Rafa (Nadal), Novak (Djokovic) and Roger struggle here. There is pressure on you to perform well, expectations are high and sometimes you're nervous."

Murray, who had won six of his seven previous meetings with Cilic, was expected to renew his rivalry with world number one and top seed Roger Federer in the semi-finals but the Swiss fell to a shock 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 3-6 6-3 defeat at the hands of Berdych.

It was the first time Federer had fallen at the quarter-final stage in New York, leaving the door open for Murray in his quest for glory.

The British number one, however, will need to be at his best to get past a buoyant Berdych, featuring in his maiden semi-final at Flushing Meadows. The Czech has had the better of their previous clashes, winning four to Murray's two.

Sixth seed Berdych is excited by the prospect of facing Murray for a place in the final.

"It couldn't be better. There is no better feeling than to play my first night session against Roger and be able to beat him," said Berdych.

"I really enjoyed it. The crowd were great and I'm really looking forward to the next one."
