Baltacha's wildcard dream

As the Betfair Athletics betting markets gather pace ahead of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games, Elena Baltacha says it would be an ‘honour’ to be handed a wildcard to represent Great Britain at the tennis event.

After a disappointing year, none of the British women have automatically qualified for the games promoting the Lawn Tennis Association to request two places in the draw to be selected after Wimbledon.

It’s believed that current UK number one Anne Keothavong will be given one of the places on Team GB while world number 91, Baltacha, should be handed the second place, something she admits would be an ‘honour’.

“If I don't get a wildcard then that's fate," Baltacha told BBC Look East. "It would be a real honour and an amazing experience but I'll have to move on."

12 months ago, the 28-year-old looked as if she was finally set to break through onto the big stage as she rose to 50th in the rankings even managed to make it to the second round of every Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

However, she has struggled in 2012 due to a change in tactics which has seen her become much more aggressive around the court.

Despite the disappointing results, the Kiev-born star believes her hard work is starting to come to fruition and is expecting to move back up the rankings in the near future, and has hopes of at least featuring in Betfair London 2012 Betting.

"We needed to look at the serve again to try and make that much stronger. We've also been looking at coming forward and mixing up my tactics as well,” she added. "I knew it was a risk but I'm glad I took it. All I need now is to get a bit of momentum. Once I get that I really feel I can move up those rankings."
