Can Andy Murray win the men's singles at Wimbledon?

Wimbledon is known around the world as the greatest tennis tournament. It is the oldest competition in the world, having been held every year since 1877 at the All England Club.

Every year, the tournament is played between June and July, and is one of four Grand Slam events, the other three Majors being the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only competition to still host games on grass, the ‘original’ surface.

In this particular article, I will focus my attention on the British number one and world number four, Andy Murray. I shall talk about the Scot’s history at Wimbledon, I will answer the question in the title, and then, the article will conclude with the bookmaker's odds regarding Murray's chances of winning the men's singles at SW19, this year.

The 24-year-old Scotsman has never been able to claim the Wimbledon men's singles title. In his first year of the tournament, back in 2005, he reached the third round of the competition, losing out to Argentine international, David Nalbandian.

The 2006 tournament saw Murray reach the fourth round, where Marco Baghdatis defeated him. After being absent from the 2007 Championships, the 24-year-old ascended to the quarterfinals of the 2008 competition. However, the eventual winner, Rafael Nadal, dispatched him.

After the 2008 Wimbledon, for three years running, the Scottish sensation reached the semi-finals of the prestigious event. In 2009, he lost to the eventual runner-up, Andy Roddick, while, in 2010 and 2011, he was defeated by Rafael Nadal.

To answer the question in the title: ‘Can Murray win the men's singles in this year's tournament?’ My answer to this would have to be ‘yes’, even without the experience of winning a Grand Slam title.

The bookmakers generally consider Murray to be the fourth favourite to win the tournament with Wimbledon odds of around 13/2.
