Defending champion Novak Djokovic has been handed the top seed in this month’s Australian Open which gets underway on January 16.

The Serbian defeated Andy Murray in the final at Melbourne Park 12 months ago and went on to win Wimbledon and the US Open in an extraordinary year of live tennisfor the world number one.

2009 winner Rafael Nadal is the second seed, whilst four-time winner Roger Federer has been handed the third seed this year.

Last year’s runner up Murray recently won the Brisbane Open in his final preparation tournament before the opening Grand Slam of 2012 and has been given the number four seed for the draw. There are already a number of tennis betting offers for those backing a repeat final.

Djokovic finished 2011 by with a 71-6 record, with the majority of his defeats coming at the back end of a long season. His first loss of the year came at the French Open when he was beaten in semi-final by Federer to deny him a chance of capturing all four of the sport’s major trophies in one campaign.

Nadal was the only other man in the men’s game to win a Grand Slam last year as he continued his dominance at Roland Garros. The Spaniard finished 2011 by helping his country win the Davis Cup, he played a crucial role by beating Juan Martin Del Potro in the decisive rubber to wrap up the title in Seville.

Although Federer is searching for his first Grand Slam title since winning the Australian Open in 2010, he finished last season in fine style by winning the World Tour Finals at the 02 Arena in London and capturing the Swiss Indoors once again.
