Argentina turn to Jaite

Posted 12-29-2011 at 04:23 PM by

The Argentine Tennis Association have named Martin Jaite as their new Davis Cup captain.

The 47-year-old, who during his playing career rose to number ten in the world rankings in July 1990, replaces Tito Vazquez, whose contract was not renewed after Argentina lost the Davis Cup final against Spain.

Jaite’s best performance in a Grand Slam came in the 1985 French Open when he reached the quarter-finals and, since finishing his playing career, he coached David Nalbandian and was also the tournament director for the annual ATP Buenos Aires event, which was won by Nicolas Almagro this year.

Jaite will be in charge of the team until 2012-13 and will have Mariano Zabaleta as his vice-captain.

Argentina have never won the Davis Cup but have been runner-ups on four occasions - in 1981, 2006, 2008 and this year. Whether people’s online bets will change following Jaite’s arrival remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Croatia’s tennis federation will not appoint Goran Ivanisevic as their Davis Cup captain because of the former Wimbledon champion’s financial demands.
The federation has revealed that Ivanisevic asked for $130,600 for a one-year contract, which they decided was too expensive.

Goran Prpic recently unexpectedly resigned as the captain of the country’s Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams so Ivanisevic will lead Croatia against Japan on a one-time, unpaid basis in the Davis Cup first-round series in February 2012, a series that will certainly attract some tempting tennis betting offers.

The 40-year-old’s success at SW19 came in 2001 and he also reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 1996 as well as winning through to three Australian Open quarter-finals and to the last eight of the French Open three times.

However, Croatian tennis officials have named the former French Open champion Iva Majoli as their women’s Fed Cup captain.
