Aggressive Federer edges past Tsonga

Roger Federer feels he has been more attacking with his return of serve this year and feels that helped him overcome Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his opening ATP World Tour Finals match.

The world number four had lost to the Frenchman twice already in 2011, including a five-set thriller in the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Federer start brightly at the O2 Arena, with the defending champion breaking in the fourth game of the first set before going on to take it 6-2. People betting on tennis will have been impressed.

But Tsonga, beaten last week by Federer in the Paris Masters final, responded and benefited from a series of Federer errors to break in the third game of the second set.

The unpredictable Frenchman had the 16-time Grand Slam winner under pressure, but Federer showed the class of a champion to end an unwanted record of never having won a deciding set against Tsonga.

Federer took the second of three match points on the Tsonga serve, with one of his famous one-hand backhand's and secured a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 Group B victory. Anyone betting ATP world Tour finals money will be wondering if Federer can keep it up.

The Swiss ace admitted that his defeat at SW19 has crossed his mind during the match, after saying that he was finding it "really hard to get into any sort of rhythm from the baseline".

But Federer found a way to beat his big-serving opponent, the seventh time in 10 meetings he has beat Tsonga, and that was satisfying for the 30-year-old.

He added: "I was just trying to stay calm, trying to wait for my chance, trying to create chances when he was not serving as well as he did at times.

"Overall I think I've been trying to do different things this year on my returning, at times a bit more offensive."
