Nadal taking time off to be fit for London

Rafael Nadal has spent most of 2011 in the shadows of Novak Djokovic – a position he certainly is not used to occupying – so the Spaniard is determined to end the season on a high at the ATP World Tour finals in London.

The world number two boasts an illustrious CV with ten Grand Slam titles and is the youngest open era tennis star to win all the four Grand Slam tournaments.
However in 2011, it has been Djokovic who has dominated world tennis. He has taken Nadal’s number one ranking and also tasted Grand Slam success at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Those who bet on tennis should remember this.

Nadal did manage to hold onto his clay court dominance with a win in the French Open but with only two other event wins all season it has been a dry spell for the 25-year-old.

He has now decided not to compete at next week's BNP Paribas Masters – where he would have been seeded second – in order to ensure he is in fighting fit shape come the ATP World Tour finals. People looking at the Grand Slam betting should bear this in mind.

Nadal, who is also due to represent Spain in the Davis Cup finals at the end of the month, has been struggling with fatigue and is hoping a break can not only help in London but further ahead into next season.

Speaking about his Paris withdrawal, he said: "It's been a difficult decision to take but I understand that it is what I need to do right now to prepare well for the end of this season and also for 2012."

Nadal is one of five players who have qualified for the ATP World Tour finals at the O2 Arena joining Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and David Ferrer, while the likes of Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish lead the chase to fill the remaining spots.
