Stars committed to their nations for Davis Cup

The Davis Cup does not often take many headlines in the tennis media but the competition's importance is evident from the fact the top four players in the world intend to represent their country in the coming weeks.

World number one Novak Djokovic will line-up for Serbia – the defending champions – in their semi-final clash with Argentina. He will join Janko Tipsarevic, Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic in the Serbia squad for the indoor clash in Belgrade.

Serbia look a strong outfit overall and should be favourites to beat Argentina, while the other semi-final also looks to have a clear winner on paper. Those who bet on tennis should remember this.

Spain will take on France in Cordoba but receive a massive boost by the news Rafael Nadal will lead them into battle as they look to make the final. The world number two is a dominant force in tennis and joins a strong Spain squad, joining David Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.

If the semi-finals go as expected it would lead to a mouth-watering final between Serbia and Spain, with the world's top two of Djokovic and Nadal going head-to-head yet again for glory. However, people should keep track of the Grand Slam betting in case either picks up an injury.

That would be a hard game to call, with the defending champions going against the 2008 and 2009 winners, but it would be a classic encounter.

Elsewhere, world number three Roger Federer has said he will travel all the way to Sydney to play for Switzerland against Australia in their World Group play-off.
Also, Andy Murray will play for Great Britain in this month's Europe/Africa Zone Group II promotion play-off against Hungary.

The fact all of these Davis Cup matches take place only days after the US Open finishes and the top stars of world tennis are prepared to travel great distance to represent their nation shows the importance of the international team event.
