Expect another new slam winner at Flushing Meadows

The 30 slams played between 2005 and 2010 brought just four new major winners. Of these Kim Clijsters and Amelie Mauresmo won at least one more slam, making it easy to identify the favourites in this era of nine different slam winners. There have been two new slam winners already this year and anyone looking at online betting UK should bear this in mind.

The talent pool is undoubtedly bigger than ever, but the era of the once-dominant Williams sisters is drawing to a close. The injuries suffered by Kim Clijsters make her second retirement an impending possibility to help contribute to the vacuum at the top of the women’s game.

Maiden major winners Li Na, and in particular Petra Kvitova, are good enough to win more majors but they are a just a pair of players in with a serious chance at every big event. This is particularly at Flushing Meadows, as Serena and Clijsters have again had their preparations disrupted by injuries and this is reflected in the Tennis Betting.

It is therefore hard to pick an outstanding candidate in the winner’s market. World number one Caroline Wozniacki, reeling after two first round exits, has slipped to sixth in the betting. She is of course hunting her first major, as are Vera Zvonareva, Victoria Azarenka and Sam Stosur, who all appeal in the winner’s market.

Considering Serena and Clijsters’ injury problems, Maria Sharapova is perhaps the likeliest slam winner to triumph. She rediscovered some of her elusive consistency at Wimbledon but mast serve better on the hard courts of New York to have a decent chance.
