Erratic Clijsters crashes out

World number one Kim Clijsters will now have to look towards the next Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, after she crashed out of the French Open on Thursday.

The Belgian tennis star was beaten 3-6 7-5 6-1 by Arantxa Rus in the second round clash at Roland Garros after a long spell out on the sidelines.

This was the 27-year-old's first appearance since March, after she damaged her shoulder and ankle in an accident at a cousin's wedding.

Clijsters looked out of sorts against Rus, as she blew two match points and managed to lose 11 of her last twelve games in an uncharacteristic performance. It's unlikely she'll attract many Wimbledon tennis bets on the strength of that showing.

Her Dutch opponent, ranked 117th in the world rankings, dug deep in the early stages of the contest as Clijsters made an impressive start to the contest.

Rus took advantage of Clijsters lack of practice and deservedly secured her place in the third round of the Grand Slam competition. Those who have placed Wimbledon bets on Clijsters will hope she can bounce back.

Despite suffering a shock defeat early on in the tournament, Clijsters has insisted she has no regrets over making her return at Roland Garros.

She said: "I had practised well. Physically everything was fine. I was definitely ready.

"I'm happy that I gave myself an opportunity. It's better to try than not to try.

"If I had said: 'It's better not to come', that would be the attitude of a real loser."

The current Australian and US Open champion will now be looking to Wimbledon for her next opportunity to claim another Grand Slam title.
