Which women will challenge at Wimbledon 2011?

The success of two surprise semi finalists at last year's Wimbledon has put punters on alert for the possibility of some more upsets in 2011. Tsvetana Pironkova has not built on that shock performance, but Petra Kvitova has gone from strength to strength and is suddenly a title challenger for slams.

The new world number 10's maiden Premier mandatory tour win at Madrid was her third title of the year and proved her game is as suited to clay as it is to grass. Her impressive run to the last four at Wimbledon in 2010 contained a 6-2 6-0 victory over Caroline Wozniacki and as one of the few form players on the circuit, she is well worth following in the Wimbledon odds.

Jarmila Gajdosova also produced her best slam performance at Wimbledon last year, matching her run to the last 16 of the French Open a few weeks earlier. She has built on that eye-catching effort, which ended with a narrow 6-4 7-6 defeat to Venus Williams, by winning her first two WTA titles and has recently entered the world's top 30. She leads the aces table on tour this year.

Julia Gorges has grabbed headlines for her recent wins over Caroline Wozniacki, but the 22- year-old German has been on an upward curve for some time. She reached two tour finals in 2010, winning at Bad Gastein and started this season well by beating 20th seed Kaia Kanepi at the Australian Open before losing a tight three-setter against Maria Sharapova in the third round.

Gorges has previously struggled at Wimbledon, although she reached the quarter finals in doubles last year, but her heavy serve – only three players have won a higher percentage of service games this season – should make her a real threat on the grass of SW19.
