Murray set for Indian Wells return

After a perhaps rushed and ill-advised return to action in Rotterdam in the aftermath of his Aussie Open hammering Andy Murray returns to competitive action this week in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Murray initially was going to sit out the World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam back in February in order to rest after his excursions in Melbourne, which saw him reach his third Grand Slam Final – his second in a row in Australia - only to be comprehensively dismantled by the in-form Novak Djokovic.

The final defeat last year to Roger Federer saw Murray's form plummet and the Scot admitted it took a while to dig himself out of the rut he was stuck in and anyone looking to place a tennis bet should remember this.

That perhaps explains then his decision to try and get over that defeat quickly and play in Holland.

But the 23-year-old only succeeded in aggravating a wrist injury before crashing out in round one to Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets.

Since then he has sought to rest up and maybe mentally recover from that Djokovic match, missing a GB Davis Cup tie against Tunisia (that GB actually won – no really they did!) in the process.

He will though emerge, hopefully refreshed and reinvigorated, in California this week for one of the highlight Masters Events of the year.

He has a good record in Indian Wells, having reached the final in 2009 and the semis two years earlier, while 12 months ago he made the quarter-finals before a straight-sets defeat by Robin Soderling.

Murray will play a qualifier or Italy's Potito Starace in his first match after receiving a bye in round one as the fifth seed.

He is though in the same side of the draw as Soderling and World number one Rafa Nadal, meaning greater challenges once again lie ahead for the Scot.
