Is Djokovic set for greatness?

Carlsberg don’t do starts to the tennis year, but if they did, it would look pretty much like Novak Djokovic’s opening to 2011.

To be honest, it doesn’t get much better for the 23-year-old Serb at the moment.

After years in the shadows of the big two in men's tennis Djokovic is finally emerging into the spotlight and looks set to take his place at the very peak of the men’s game.

He rounded off 2010 by leading Serbia to Davis Cup success, their first major sporting title. He then opened up 2011 by lifting the Australian Open title after a straight sets thrashing of Andy Murray in the final in Melbourne. Fans will no doubt be keeping a close eye on the live score goalwire.

Moving quickly on to the Dubai Championships the 23-year-old beat Tomáš Berdych, Florian Mayer, Feliciano Lopez and Michael Llodra to set up a final meeting with Roger Federer.

The 29-year-old, who held the ATP number one position for a record 237 consecutive weeks, has been one of the stumbling blocks between Djokovic and further Grand Slam success and live scores goalwire fans will know this.

But Djokovic has emerged this year with a vastly improved serve, something of a weakness in his game previously, demonstrated by making 93% of his first serves in his opening four games, setting him up nicely to take the opening set in just 33 minutes.

The convincing nature of the Serb’s 6-3 6-3 win in Dubai – his second straight sets win over Federer in as many months - suggests Federer’s star is on the wane and Djokovic is ready to rise in his place.
