ATP World Tour Finals Group B preview

Every member of Group B at the ATP World Tour Finals will feel they have something to prove. The tournament rounds off a long, hard season but all participants in the second pool will be desperate to end 2010 on a high for varying reasons.

David Ferrer, the tournament outsider, will want to show he deserves his place at the event and is not just making up the numbers in the absence of last year's finalists Nikolay Davydenko and Juan Martin del Potro. A modest return from the year's Slams and a poor head-to-head record against his opponents suggests progress to the semi finals is unlikely and the ATP tennis betting reflects this.

Robin Soderling is keen to show his breakthrough over the last 18 months can yield major titles. Runner-up at the French Open for the last two years, the big-hitting Swede needs to show he can go all the way in when in good form, and a maiden ATP Masters 1000 victory in Paris this month is a step in the right direction.

Soderling is bound to make qualification difficult for Roger Federer and Andy Murray, two men desperate to lay down markers for next season. Both players have rather laboured in the shadow of Rafael Nadal in 2010 and need to rediscover the consistency necessary to lift major trophies. A jump in the rankings would not go amiss either and the online tennis betting suggests the pair will be battling it out.

Murray was consistently brilliant in winning the Shanghai Masters last month, with his straight-sets demolition of Federer in the final particularly notable. The Scot has now won eight of his 13 meetings with the Swiss legend.

Federer has won 24 of his 25 clashes with Soderling and Ferrer, so it is hard to bet against the four-time winner reaching the last four for the eighth time in nine attempts. Soderling against Murray seems to be the crucial clash in this group and the winner should join Federer in the semi finals.
