Del Potro facing fresh injury battle

Juan Martin Del Potro has revealed he faces an uncertain future after admitting he could be forced to undergo wrist surgery for the second time in his career. The world number five, who missed most of 2010 with a career-threatening right wrist injury, has been struggling with a similar problem with his left wrist.

Following disappointing performances in the Australian Open and then in Rotterdam, the problem flared up during Del Potro’s Dubai Open first round tie against Somdev Devvarman. After just over an hour of his opening round tie, the Argentine was forced to accept defeat after struggling throughout the first set with the injury and call an end to the match, handing Devvarman a victory that won’t have gone down well with many of those who bet on tennis on the bet365 website.

Del Potro, who became the ATP Tour's comeback player of the year in 2011 after recovering from his injured right wrist, had been slowly getting back to where he was before his fitness problems. The 25-year old reached the semi-finals of last year’s Wimbledon in another promising season, reclaiming his place in the world top-five and surprising those betting fans who had written him off.

While the former US Open champion has admitted he is unsure as to whether he will have to undergo surgery on his wrist, although the world number-five revealed he wasn’t sure he would be able to come back from another wrist operation.

"I cannot say that (it will be surgery) yet - but I'm feeling similar pains to the other hand and what I felt four years ago.”

"It's not really positive for my future. But I will do whatever the doctor says and I will have to be as strong as ever. I don't feel really well. My wrist is hurting a lot, and, you know, everybody knows what's happened to me four years ago with my other wrist.”
