Davis Cup

Hola

This week in tennis was devoted to the Davis Cup competition. Spain took on Germany in an away tie, and came away rather successfully. On the first day of play, Spain got away to a 2-0 lead. Nadal defeated Nicolas Kiefer in 3 easy sets, 7-6 6-0 6-3, but David Ferrer had a little more trouble in his match against Phillip Kohlschriber, needing four sets to dispose of him, 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-2.

On the second day of play, it was now or never for the German side, needing to win the critical doubles rubber. After a very long tough match, the german duo of Kohlschreiber and Petzschner couldn't defeat Spain's Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez. Spain won this match 6-7 7-6 6-4 2-6 12-10 (I kid you not, that last set is 12-10). And therefore Spain had won their quarter-final, so consequently Fernando jumped on Feli to celebrate. Everybody jumps on Feli.

Then on the third and final day, 2 dead rubbers were to be played, where Verdasco defeated Michael Berrer 2-6 7-6 6-4, and Kiefer managed to beat Feliciano Lopez, 6-4 7-6. Spain won this tie 4-1. A great effort from the Spanish team! They will now go on to play the USA in their semi-final, which will be played in Spain. It's hard to see the Americans winning this time, because it's 99% certain that the Spaniards will pick clay as the surface, and the nicest way I can put it is that the Americans all suck on clay. Looks like it will be a great year for the Spaniards in Davis Cup.

Next week there is a tournament in Valencia, Spain, owned by Juan Carlos Ferrero. Most of the Spaniards are playing in that tournament, which has had it's status increased this year, so hopefully it should be a good tournament.

Adios

(P.S. Nadal lost to Davydenko in the Miami semi-finals last week)
