Former world number-one, Roger Federer, will be hoping to have fully recovered from a number of injury "niggles" before he starts his ATP World Tour 500 Swiss Indoor campaign, held in his home town of Basel. The 30-year old recently saw his world ranking drop a place, down to fourth behind Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Current world number-one, Caroline Wozniacki, will this week be looking to claim the WTA Championship title in Istanbul, which would see her finish the season still ranked number-one in the world. The Dane needs to either win the tournament, or reach the final with two or more victories in the round-robin stage, if she is to finish the season as the world number-one, a position she has held for the entire season, despite once again failing to win a Grand Slam.

Broadcasters have apparently fallen in love with professional tennis, with both the BBC and ITV purchasing (or continuing to own, in the case of the former company) the rights to future tournaments.

The BBC has renewed its commitment to broadcasting Wimbledon, signing a six-year deal with SW19 chiefs, while rival firm, ITV, has secured the rights to the French Open, otherwise known as the Roland Garros. Fans of tennis betting will be pleased by this news.

Austrian tennis player, Thomas Muster, has retired from the professional game, after his recent loss to Dominic Thiem in the Austrian Open. The left-handed player lost the match 6-2, 6-3, in what was his 896th appearance on a tennis court. "I didn't know whether to cry, or to play", the 44-year-old said, in the wake of his final match.

Novak Djokovic will go into January's Australian Open looking for a third consecutive Grand Slam title and the Serbian should again be the man to beat in Melbourne.
The world number one has had some back issues though since his win at the US Open in September and there will be a host of players waiting to take his title, should he not be at his best come January.
